Hello
I cannot make up mind about buying or loaning a horse. I recently had a horse on loan who i adored and i was meant to buy him and... well I'm sure those of you who read the posts know the rest it basically all went horribly wrong, and i feel very, very 'fingers burnt!'

now i do not know whether to buy a horse or loan one. Problem is i cannot really afford above 3 to 3.5k and would like to get a 16.2hh+ ID X TB or something similar. I'd love to have a youngster I could bring on and school up or even break in. Problem is everywhere i look horses seem to be ridiculous prices!

I have seen a lovely horse ID X TB 12 year old for loan who looks lovely but really worried about loaning a horse again. Now really don't know what to do! i have a lovely yard where i could keep a horse and a great network of support as well as a flexible job to be able to fit one in - just finding the right horse is the problem!!!

what would everyone else do?

thanks
x

i'm quite keen on loaning, if u find the right horse its ideal but things can go wrong. if u decide to loan make sure u have a proper contract drawn up

good luck

loaning is normally okay I reckon, I've had three good experiences. Trouble is you can't own a horse and save at the same time sometimes if money is a bit pushed!

keep looking for one to buy. i cant see why you cant get a nice horse for 3k especialy if you are willing to break it in.

i brought my mare for 3k and she has olympic sj bloodlines. unbroken mind but i got a very good quality horse for a decent price.

i got her from carron niccol, have had a few from her and they come with a 2 month warrenty. good thing about this is that obviously if you need to take it back you can, if you decide to keep it THEN get it vetted. win win situation i think.
cant remeber the web site tho.

I would buy personally. With loan horses I feel you can put in so much effort just for the horse you have brought on and become attached to to be taken away from you at any time.

I got a 16.3 IDxTB, he was 6 when I got him 18months ago. He was greenish but capable of doing prelim dressage and could do lateral work etc but very nervy with jumping, but I hadnt had a horse for 8 years so wanted something I could progress with. He is now doing Novice dressage and 3ft SJ and is fantastic. He was 3.5k and I found him on horsemart.

You will find something for that price, just keep looking.

ETA: dont be aftaid to look at horses a little higher in price and try to knock them down. A horse is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

go and see all loan and sale horses that appeal to you and let the falling in love / bonding process work its natural magic as to who you want and what you feel and that will decide that!

The more I think about it the more I think I should wait and buy. I've been riding my whole life and broken a few horses in so I am not as concerned about that, and would love to have a youngster! After splitting up with my partner a couple of years ago i had to sell my two gorgeous horses because of money and it broke my heart! Now I have a better job and can afford to have one (ref to other thread - would never give up riding/horses for boyfriend!! lol) of my own, I really want a horse I can have for life, which, that plus awful experiences loaning, is part of my worry about loaning!

So if anyone hears of a nice youngster up for grabs let me know!!

I think this would be the right way forwards??!!??

;-)
