I am in a position where I could buy a youngster to back and bring on, but I'm not sure whether I should or not. I'm working with an instructor/trainer at the moment as a sort of working pupil with the view to gain experience and potentially take over parts of the business. We are currently taking on other peoples' horses and ponies for training but we have discussed the option of buying, backing and bringing on others. I'm fortunate that I am of a size where I could back a fairly small pony and ride it on, but equally could deal with bigger horses. My problem is sourcing affordable youngsters as a lot of the asking prices are just too high.

I'm sorry if it seems like a bit of a dodgey outfit, I don't want to start a dealership of poor quality, rushed or unhappy horses or ponies. I'm hoping to learn to produce happy, well trained animals from scratch. As a guide I'd say I'd want to take on youngsters 2-3 years old from about 13hh up to 16hh and with a max price of £2000 that could happily adapt to any job. We are based in the Angus region of Scotland. I'm not trying to advertise anything, I'd just like some opinions about whether this would be a good idea and where I might look. I check horse ads almost every day because this is something I would love to do. I have good guidance and support from my very experienced employer since although I have owned horses in the past and am working with young horses I haven't had much to do with backing them.

Thanks for reading, and I really appreciate any views or comments.

I buy and sell young ponies when i need to. i am experiance in breaking and schooling youngsters. I am small enough to break ponys and currently have a sec a. He is going to make a childs pony i am bringing him on carefully and always sell to sutable homes not necesseraly the highest bidder. The sec a is going to be sold so i can buy myself a nice youngster to keep. I don't think i'm a dodgy dealer i just produce nice safe childrens riding ponies. (someone has to). I wish you luck if you desied to procied with your venture.
