I was half heartidly looking for a horsebox (3.5ton) as im sick of blagging lifts and relying on people....

ive found a company which will rent me a box for £40 a day...(really good) which i can drive myself after august (insurance - theirs not mine!)

However - i keep finding little boxes (which admitidly need work) for £1200ish...

Is it really worth having your own box - costs etc?? If i had my own box i would be out every weekend.... but then again im a poor student and work my ass off for my horse so not sure having extra box costs would be a clever idea?

please talk me out of viewing this box?? (p.s i can afford it to buy and insure etc but any work i may be screwed?? :o)

Have you thought about buying the box with a friend? Although not ideal it will mean that you can both share hidden/petrol costs.

I've never bought a box so can't advise of running costs.

Dont buy. Rent. At that price it will be an old lorry and it will cost you ££££ every time to get it through the plating.

There are some 3.5 ton boxes out there which are cheap & reliable. I met a person at a venue who had bought an old VW for around £1k & it was a little cracker but there are so many pieces of junk also. Because of the law change with many drivers being limited to 3.5 ton vehicles, many old, tired & totally knackerd vans which were worth only scrap value were cheaply made into horseboxes. Vans which had little value were transformed into horseboxes & sold for several thousand pounds. Unfortunately the conversions were poor & the donor vehicles were unreliable & in poor condition.

With the very limited budget you have I think it may be better for you to rent at that reasonable price & at least you will be in a sound, reliable vehicle which isn't going to financially drain you in maintaining. ;)

thanks for the replies :)

I can rent for now and tbh im probably better doing that and buying next year when i have graudated uni and (hopefully!) got a job :/

I just want to be out every weekend lol :D
