To Clip Or Not To Clip? Help!

I have a 23 year old Cob X Arab who has Cushings and is on medication. Usually throughout the year she is worked and doing low level things but due to training a youngster and keeping another pony fit in haven't got the time to do as much anymore. Should I have her clipped all year round as she becomes very hairy and through the summer would it be too uncomfortable if she was unclipped? Also what sort clips would you get? Thanks
 
I clipped my 19 yr old ppid horse about a month ago ..full bar legs and half face, he's def more comfortable after clipping and i rug him accordingly to keep him happy...I still ride him though but I do know of a few people locally who have unridden ponies who clip all year round to keep theirs comfortable with ppid....try a high trace clip maybe?
 
i kept my cushings horse clipped all year round and did a dealer clip so she still had her back covered and i left her hindquarters as well. i rugged when necessary to keep her warm but mainly to keep her dry...
 
I suppose it depends on how hot the horse gets and just how hairy they are.
My cushings TB type got a decent winter coat (enough to get clammy on mild spring/autumn days.) he would have moulted by End June and start getting his winter coat in August!

I liked to keep him un rugged as much as possible so I'd give him a low chaser clip end Sept/oct depending on weather, let it grow out over winter then trace clip in Spring.
 
I think you should, it sounds like she needs it! To keep her comfy I would recommend an Irish Clip but in summer a Bib Clip would probably do :) If you get something heavier in summer make sure she gets a New Zealand on when she's out in the field and if it's colder at night, she may need a stable sheet.
 
I clip my 23 year old cushings horse. It is so much easier to manage him. I find just a rain sheet is perfect for keeping him dry and comfortable. It is far easier to put an extra layer on if he feels cool than it is to sort him out when he is overheated and wet.

We clipped our cushings pony - he was more comfortable that way. As the disease progresses they have real trouble controlling their own temperature and we found he would overheat very easily. So we clipped him year round and managed it for him with rugs in the winter and fans in his stable in the summer.
 
Mine was so happy last year! First year he was unclipped and rugless. He never shivered nor was cold. Ever since I had him as a yearling (23 yrs ago now) he's not lost his coat until the end of June and started changing his coat mid Aug. I clipped him out mid/end March last year and popped a lightweight on him.

I nearly took a bit off last September when it was so hot but left him. He's semi-retired so doesn't warrant a clip for work. He's showing no typical cushings symptoms, only discovered a slightly elevated level on a MOT blood test.
