Hi guys, i havent posted for a while, but could do with your advice, I am thinking of trying some dressage with my boy, but not sure, what do you lot think?
You could always do a walk and trot test. Or, if you have got canter on both reins sussed then try a prelim.
I did my first dressage test last year. My only aim was to get to the show, do something that resembled a dressaged test then get home again safe and sound!
If you remember that getting to a show and competing is an achievement in itself then you can go and have a good time! Just don't put pressure on yourself to be in the ribbons!!
Why not? You've really got nothing to lose by trying. In the end it's the cornerstone of every discipline, so even if you decide not to actually compete at dressage it may lead you into something else you enjoy. (Even if it just makes going on a hack a bit more pleasurable then it's worth it!)
Don't do it. Because suddenly about a month before the test it will occur to you that there are rather a lot of things in your test your not actually sure your horse can do... like cantering, bending and medium walk...
In all seriousness I entered my first dressage test on Hens in July, I had ridden him about 4 times and hadn't had a single lesson on him and I hadn't had lessons myself for a long time. He was still a very unschooled ex racer we came last with 44% but I had the time of my life!
We are now planning tests three and four and I can't wait!
Go for it! It's honestly so relaxed it's untrue, you simply turn up at the required time, there often isn't more than 10 horses at the show , ride your test and go
It'll help you with all aspects of ridden work if you know that your flatwork is there, and its nice to get written comments from people who havent always seen him to let you know how you're improving
