So advice please people....

Vardi is half Warmblood half Appaloosa and appears to have inherited the Appaloosa somewhat weedy mane and tail....

His mane basically sticks up like a multi coloured bog brush until the top where it is a thick lump of frizz that will not stay on one side or the other.

I have had him over a year now and origionally I thought I would let it grow long but it has only grown 2 cm in over a year in length however in width.....mmmm

Now he has a pretty heavily built neck which is muscelling up nicely and I have been pondering hogging him.

I will fess up here and say I do not show or compete and hogging him would be purely for my own vanity as I think he would look good ! as I am sure that Vardi does not give a toss what his mane looks like.

So two questions;

1. Do you reackon it will suit him?

2. Am I being a shallow owner for even considering it?

What is the worst that can happen? If it doesn't suit him just let it grow back. It may even grow back better and thicker.

I suggested to Astrid last weekend and she looked at me as if I was suggesting lopping off a foot...apparently it is never done in Holland, I had to show her some pics of my old mare with and sans mane before she calmed down and accepted that it can look really good. My old mare was 3/4 ID 1/4 TB and had a front end like a sherman tank with a mane she looked like a Dray horse without we got away with heavy hunter

Tough one, I have a mare of the same breeding and same problem, but haven't hogged as I just don't like the look. Her mane is kept to the same length as your boy as I find it easiest at this length! I do have to say though, my mares mane took ages to grow and when it did it was horrible, really thick at the top and straggly at the bottom!! Personally I don't think it would suit him but each to there own its not like your chopping a leg off!! Give it a go, it'll grow back (at some point)

nooo, don't do it. hogged manes only look reasonably good on cobs (and even then i prefer to see a mane!) and one huge drawback about them is that if you jump, and the horse overjumps and you put a hand on the top of neck to steady yourself, your hand will shoot sideways off the hogged bit, giving you no help at all. (bitter experience speaking here, managed not to hit the deck... just)
if you want it to look fab, stick a neck cover on him to train it. or, admire his bed-head hair!

I think hogging only suits those with really chunky necks.....he hasn't got there yet....he'll look like a polo pony!

Getting on is another consideration. I've been riding a friend's 15.1 hogged cob and I find it really difficult to get on without a bit of mane to grab hold of. I have no idea why as it's not like I use to to drag myself up, but it makes it much harder!

I wouldn't do it. You could try plaiting or bunching it over to one side a leaving in for a while, it might encourage it to grow down rather than up. Also a rug with a neck cover might help to tame it a bit.
