To Hog or Not to Hog????

She has no muscle but is quite a chunky monkey and I think she'll have a nice neck on her once she's muscled up.

I want to do many working hunter pony, SJ and hunting on her......so do I go for a short mane or all off?

Everything else is coming off on Sunday!
 
I would pull at the moment till her neck is chunky, they look odd hog with no neck IMHO.
What is she, she looks Welshish?
 
If you are wanting to do workers with her I would go for a short mane so that it is easy to plait.

Generally and traditionally, workers would not be hogged. However, I have seen some 'occasional' workers competing with hogged manes.

Well I decided to hog mine who had managed nearly to get his mane back since his last brush with the clippers!

I want to use neck covers and he will loost half his mane anyway, plus I hate plaiting!!!

She's welsh D x welsh C - from a stud near to me.....nice as I know the person who bred her.....think she'd throw a nice foal in a couple of years.

That was my thought too.....
 
clipped out and short mane, my sons pony was hogged, nightmare, had to keep trimming it every weekend as it got really spiky and horrid!!! its taken 18 months to grow out, if you want to do workers, unless its cob workers you should be plaited

Welsh = Mountain & Moorland and theoretically should not be hogged (or even trimmed out!). If you pull it, do it in such a way as to get rid of the bulk and some of the length but not looking too "pulled". M&Ms should not be plaited but you can put in one nice "cob plait", inter-twined with a ribbon at the top of her neck.
 
hard to say, frank was hogged on arrival and did look smart and I cant say I havent been tempted since, though I like a bit of mane to get on!!

took a year to grow out and then I left it long

I pulled it short this year and he has looked really smart with it

He has always had a good neck though, I would start with pulling it short and then see.

My chunky monkey is sporting a massive, and i mean massive mohican.
I've been growing it out for 5 months now since i bought him and there's no sign of it falling over before it hits the sky.

well if you say she's welsh d x welsh c that makes her a welsh cob section d. and welsh cobs are ment to have manes and pulled tails. but thats only if you want to actually keep her looking like a welsh cob. p.s if you hogg her be prepared to have a little bit of stick from welsh cob enthusiasts lol especially if you come here to wales lol

If you arn't showing as an M+M go for it. ALthough even WHP being hogged is not the 'done' thing. I think yours would look smartest pulled

fanks! I did speak to her but she never got back to me after his tests! I think he would have been too sharp for me aswell, so decided to get a horse/pony that I'm actually not scared of - thought that would be a bonus.....

Not "a theory" - Rules for Showing M&Ms.
No M&M with a hogged or plaited (apart from one "cob plait") mane would be placed in an M&M showing class.
However, in a Ridden Cob or Cob Type class - a hogged mane would be acceptable.
Ask the Cilsanen lady - she is a Welsh Cob "showing girl".
