I have an awesome 13.3hh NF who is rising six. Broken and backed myself. I am nearly 30 and quite short. Myself and my husband are considering trying for a baby - if we decide now is the right time Im not sure what to do with my boy once I get too heavy. I weigh 9stone (57kg) at the moment.

I have owned him since he was 9 months so I dont want to sell if im honest with myself.
His good bits:
Jumps 2'6 with ease, loves x-country has been out schooling. Has done a fun ride and sensible the whole way. Will go out hunting later this month.

A proper snaffle mouth pony- in a NS peanut loose ring for everything.

Has done county/RC showing. Done dressage and placed every time out.

Problem is- hes pants in traffic. Sometimes hes foot perfect (the more you do the better he is) but other times hes spooky. He basically tries to spin if he spots a vehicle he doesnt like. (usually large fast moving ones) he always spins away but not something i would want to put a kid on. But I cant see an adult being interested in loaning him?!

He can buck- not nasty but excited ones - e.g. after a xcountry fence or after a good gallop. I think it would scare a kid- He's never had be off and its occasional but can happen.

Im happy to pay his livery throughout but I dont want all my hard work ruined by a child who gets nervous of him and allows him to get away with things.

I could turn him away for 6-9 months but he has a tendancy to blow up like a balloon ( even had him tested for his blood sugar levels I have been worried about his weight a lot in the past)

Or I could pay someone to school him once or twice a week and get the OH (who is horsey) to lunge him but Im worried I wont be able to tack him up/muck out etc?

Why dont you worry about crossing that bridge when you come to it?? - In the mean time may be work on some of the issues above? _ when we started ttc I was all panicky about what to do with new 5yo ISH, now 3 YEARS later still ttc and starting to embark on IVF I still am not worried as things take time :)

Loaning unless there is off road hacking could be a disaster, even if you could find someone suitable I would not be sure I would want to risk him getting worse in traffic or being sent back at a bad time for you. I would continue to ride as long as possible, you do not know how soon you will get pregnant if you start trying it can take months, then as you need to cut down the riding find someone to come in and school him with you lunging when you can to keep the weight down. As long as you keep on top of it he should not get too fat, if the time off is next winter then consider turning away then as it should be safer than summer, the yard work can be kept to a minimum, possibly pay for some jobs if you struggle.

Thanks for the replies - I know I have a bit of time but I wanted to start working things through my mind. I don't think I would be able to pay for anyone to muck out etc on maternity leave! He's such a fun pony but not a novice ride! Arg why can't he be big enough for an adult?!?!

You might get an adult rider, it wouldn't hurt to advertise for one :) I think he sounds very nice but am probably miles away from you :(

If he hunts well that might be a loaning opportunity next autumn/winter. If you get him out this season and he settles well, and hopefully this would help with the excited bucking and traffic issues, he'd be a really valuable horse to someone next year who wants to get into hunting.

Meh, I'd just keep him and turn him away for a bit once you get 'too pregnant' (lol) to ride him. Few month off won't hurt...Doubt you'll get too heavy if you're 9 stone now. I rode my welsh D mare (13.3) at almost 13 stone and she was absolutely fine (though am 11 stone now)
