I am having a continual dilemma about moving my mare and dont know if it is a to do or a to dont!

She is a 3yo TB mare, nice mare but can be a bit of an unsettled, spooky flid sometimes but has improved alot over the past few weeks now she is really settled into a fairly good routine.

The yard she is at now i have had her at since i bought her last June. It is an okay yard but rubbish hacking, not much grass and biggest downsides are that they have to stay in every night through the year and you have to buy everything from the yard shop (which isn't cheap) so it is more expensive than i can really afford. Also there is a new yard manager which although the yard is more organised the level of horse care seems to have been reduced with my mare having been switched herds without my say so (when i actually asked that she stayed where she is because the big mare herd beat her up last time she was with them) and now she's covered in cuts and hoof marks. Also she has now been brought in twice with afflictions (once a fairly deep cut on her side and the other week with swollen glands, and noone either notice or bothered to tell me. I pay to have her turned out or brought in but an never 100% sure who is actually doing it and there is no continuous care from one consistent person who would know if my horse was ill or unhappy for any reason.

However, she is settled at this yard. The yard is nice and busy and there are always people about which is an advantage as i am in the process of backing her. There are people to ride with and people at the yard like my mare so there are quite a few people used to handling her. It is also quite a spooky yard which is good for bombproofing her.

My other problem is that i am tied to the school run daily and as the yard is 15mins away from home (but via school) i have to have her either brought in or turned out each day and i do her stable, school her etc the other end of the day which is not ideal and means the boys have to sit in the car whilst i play horses before or after school. I cant come up after the school run as she is left alone in the yard and box walks, and i cant go up later in the evening as it means having to go out again later in the day having already been that way to do the school run and i just cant afford the fuel.

The new yard is more expensive, and slightly more of a pain in the bum to get to but she can live out and she is going with another youngster from the yard. However my biggest concerns are that the yard is quite quiet and if she is living out i will be going up to work her in the day when there is noone around if something happens. Also the gelding i'll be sharing with does not like being on his own in the filed and if i take my mare out to work her i would feel responsibile for the welfare of this other horse and always worrying he's going to leap out the field (which he has done before!). Equally i do not know how my mare is on her own if vice versa and he is removed. Saying that they may settle and get used to it.

The yard is much nicer, you get your own field to share with one other horse, brand new stables horsewalker and better, quieter hacking. But again if we graze down our grass that is all we have and i may end up paying more again for hay and still having her in most nights whcih means if the girl i am sharing the field with cannot turn her out or bring her in either end of the day i would be paying for this as well.

Sorry for the waffling but really am not sure what to do. i won't know if the other yard is right unless i move there but if i dont like it i am effectively stuck there. Am i best to leave her where she is as if i leave and dont like it or she is unsettled i cannot go back to the other yard and there is nowhere else in my locality that is suitable.

The main reason for moving being that in theory it should be cheaper but if she doesn't settle as planned or the grazing doesn't last it will work out more but again i woudln't know this til i got there.

Do i just pretend the other yard never offered me a space and in which case i'd never have had the option to leave the current yard anyway??!!

Any advice??? :s

have you talked to your current ym first? I would sit down and discuss your concerns, if these are not met or not satisfactory then I would consider moving but it does sound a bit like out of the frying pan into the fire.

Neither yard sounds particular ideal, for one reason or another.

What else have you got that you could consider, yard wise....??

Nothing else to consider really. Have looked at a couple of other places but either extortionately expensive or terrible (bad fencing, no school, dumping ground etc).

The yard i am at at present is too big for its own good which is the biggest problem. No personal service and nearly 40 horses- some of whom i couldn't even tell you who they were. Not really any point in talking to YM as she has no vested interest in the yard, is never there and they just re-fill the stables wihthin a matter of days so no loss to them really who comes or goes- yard has a really high turnover. Heard this morning that i am one of 6 who has handed their notice in in the last week and since i arrived late June there must literally have been over a fifty comings and goings!!!

The new yard is a much nicer, brand new yard and with only 12 horses maximum would have that personal touch with everyone knowing your horse. Just my main worry is i wont know if she is settled until we are there and then there is no going back!!

Having always had very easy going horses before that have settled quickly i am not so sure with her. Saying that, the current yard has lots of different yards in one big yard and she has already moved between these yards three times and moved herds quite regularly and settled okay.

It is just really getting me down either way as dont know what to do. This morning i decided i was staying, now i want to go?!

I think i may go back up the yard and take another look at the new place.

Looking for livery is a nightmare....

I'm in the same area as you and I'm 99.9% sure I know which yard you are on. It does have a very high turnover for a number of reasons.

What sort of livery are you looking for and which area (east or west of where you are)? I may know of somewhere? you can pm me the name of the new yard if you like, I may know it.

Hi Galaxy, yes i am sure it probably, most definately is the yard you are thinking of! ;)

I am looking for DIY. I live in Hedge End and already have at least a 10minute drive to the yard but my son goes to Botley school which i why i have had her over in that direction and do not want to deviate too far in the other direction.

Problem i have is that i need a school, would like her to live out in the summer and need assisted services as we go away alot and nowhere seems to offer everything without compromising something else!

I have advertised on NFED for about 4 months and everything else i found is unsuitable for one reason or another until i found the new yard which i know the owner of as she used to be at said current yard!

If you can suggest somewhere would be much appreciated! :)

Have you tried Hanscotts in Horton Heath?

I would suggest the yard I'm at in Fair Oak, but the YO doesn't do services (well will do holiday cover, but nothing regular).

Will keep thinking....

Personally I'd prefer yard B but I would have my concerns about the other horse you share with if it's very clingy and makes a big deal everytime you take your horse out of the field, last thing you want is them getting joined at the hip, although if they are next to another field of horses they shouldn't be too bad.

Quiet hacking or having somewhere safe to ride or lead/long rein your horse is very important, not just now but when they get to Kevin age shall we say.

I'd be a nervous wreck if my horse kept coming in with injuries all the time, I'd rather pay a bit more and know that he or she was in a more settled heard/field or buddied up with a horse that gets on well with them. Yes there will always be the odd field injury no matter where you have them (TB after all ;)) but I'd rather pay that extra in feed/hay than potential vet bills.

Although you don't know she'd settle but if the place is more quiet relaxed enviroment (less spooky) she hopefully should settle well.

Good facilities are a 'gods send' when you have a youngster, also having a peaceful place to train them is as well, not only does it help to relax you and the horse but you also have to think about routine, if there is less people on the yard, is there is more chance of you having access to the school on a regular basis? and without too many distractions or people wanting to share the school with you etc, bringing on a youngster in a hectic yard does have it's advantages yes but there is many advantages to being on a quiet yard too.

I see how it's a hard decision to make...sorry wasn't much help but I'd prefer yard 2 myself.
