Should i plait for a hunter trial this weekend?

I know some don't, so as not to restrict movement over fences- but i won't be doing any big fences!

PLAIT!
not plaiting is just lazy. Plaits look smarter and you can enhance the shape of the horses neck.
There is nothing like helping at events and seeing horses going in and out without plaited manes and then the odd horse, which is plaited, is honey to the eyes and really looks amazing.

Oh thanks alot, think you have just insulted the vast majority of people on here who hunter trial because I know very very few people who hunter trial plaited. 1) I like something to hold onto JUST incase 2) its just not the done thing.
Been to hunter trials since I was old enough to toddle about and hold bertha at the end of the leadrope, think I have seen about the same amount as Abbey, or less...

If you were doing an activity where you wanted the horse to look nice and presentable (i.e. dressage/sj) then yeah, plait for for HTing theres no point because people won't really see you that close up much, the horses neck will be stratched out to allow a better flow of air into the lungs so the shape of the neck really goes out of the window and you might need something to grab onto if you have a sticky moment.

At the end of the day, plaiting is not compulsory, if you have time and want to plait then go for it, but i would still leave that handful of mane available for those OMG fences. If you do not plait, no one will think badly of you. Its entirely up to you, what is important is that you go and have FUN!

Best of Luck.

hardly anyone does for hunter trials and as said above it is more to hang on to!!

but personally i do as think my mare looks a bit scruffy not plaited. but that is just personal preference. and she only takes 10minutes to plait up the night before so its not too much hassle

That is certainly not the case for people who event and have their horses plaited up for the dressage and SJ phase of it and take them out for the XC. Surely there is some reason for that and it is not laziness!!

Must admit I do on the arab, as his mane is long and just gets in the way when shortening reins etc, but just do a running plait along his neck. Wouldn't bother if it was one of the ones with a short mane!
