hopefully pics here as not done this before. What do you think should I pull his mane? He was hogged when bought 4 years ago and has had this mane ever since. Pros of pulling, might look smarter, would keep him cooler in the summer, would get in the way less. Cons I'm very used to it so will look different, and in the winter at the mo although he is fully clipped I don't have to worry about one side of his neck getting wet.

At the mo i tend to arab plait for for drsg and jumping in the summer cos he gets so warm but it doesn't stay tidy for long as I can't get him to do his on the bit placement tied up so his neck tends to pull on it and my reins wreck it.

If i do pull how short? bearing in mind it is very thick at the top and may need some serious thinning up there to get it to lie flat

and a pic of the other side of his neck just so you can see what it actually looks like under all that hair

Just pull it a little to start with and see what you think. Then pull it a bit shorter if you like it. Personally I would pull it.

lol, had a feeling you might say that hence why I haven't asked before!

I do actually quite like pulling manes, I think I just got a bit excited to have hair lying flat since he was hogged (am occasionally tempted to take the clippers to all of it, scabby feathers and all!)

see everyone that we know tends to like it but I think thats just cos they remember him hogged. It kinda suits his character (well sometimes) as you can see he was rareing to go to the show this morning!- also shows that he looks distinctly less tubby under saddle when he actually applies his stomach muscles, he is actually pretty fit!

fihunt t'is the welsh.

fihunt would you mind posting a pic of genie so i can see how long her mane is for comparison? Am peering at your siggy but its not clear

NO!!!!!!!

Please leave it its a gorgeous mane!!! If its too think, maybe thin it sligthly, but hes such a goregous welsh id leave it au natural!!!!

Hes a beautiful boy!

thanks fihunt, its always nice to look at genie anyhow, think I might just tidy up the ends a bit and straighten is slightly.

Think I have spent too long round pulled M+Ms

Don't pull it!

Pros of leaving it:

Looks lovely (gorgeous colour, nice and full and even)
Easier/faster to plait (if Arab plait doesn't work for you, try lattice/diamonds)
Fly/rain protection

Cons: can't think of any!

Personally, pulled M&Ms are my pet hate... but each to their own!

slinkyuni...... beautiful ned, with a beautiful proper mane!!!

Im currently riding a show cob with a hogged mane and its like ARGH where is it?!! (although saves me about 4 hours prior to a show! hehe)

can't do hogged manes, only cos what do you hold on to when getting on!

Can honestly say have never grabbed mane when about to fall off so it doesn't serve that purpose.

we managed 3rd in our M+M WHP today, should have been 2nd I think and the jumps needed to be sig higher but ho hum, he poss could have been seen as a bit rude! dressage went well, apparently I had an 'inspired bit of riding and got an 8 for rider being listened to or whatever it is called on the new sheets, so he does pay attention sometimes! Here is a flowing mane pic;

His mane is actually really easy to brush through and seems to keep itself very clean unlike mums palo.

Pull it! Not a lot just to neaten it up. Take it to so it lays just abopve the level of where the ring is on his headcollar.
He obviously has a very nice neck and shoulder but to be honest you lose it a bit where it is hidden by that mane!

Well a lot of people showing natives now do take a bit of the length off, it does In my opinion look smarter as less scraggly bits at the end but it is up to you.

If you like it then leave it, if you dont then take some off.

Well not sure you have actually helped me decide, think will maybe just tidy the ends a bit and keep the length, oh I don't know!

yeah...thats it...keep the length and perhaps tidy the scraggles, keep that mane flowing in the breeze

poppymoo, that does require a breeze though which has been somewhat lacking recently and can't have the poor soul overheating at his age!

It does make for some nice jumping pics though and I have a lovely one of us cantering down the beach, legs all a blur

Is he pure Welsh? If so, Id pull but not too much. Welsh D's are meant to be "neatened" to a degree... my Welsh Cobs mane is about 1/3 length of yours. Id make it a bit shorter, say half it mainly to keep him more comfy.
