I would have to disagree. :) All of mine have full feathers at the moment and even though it can be a pain in the backside keeping them clean, I personally think they look better full. Lovely horse by the way.

i am a feather girl, but tbh, I would take your horse's off - if it doesn't work, use pig oil and sulphur and they'll grow back like wildfire ;)

Is she from a lady with the initials SH ?? Have you had a vet look over her ?

Yes I would give her a really good tidy up and she will look gorgeous .

I agree with taking them off and possibly hogging her mane as well, although it would look good nicely pulled as well - she's a lovely looking horse. Also, if you take them off then you will be able to properly see what sort of a state her legs are in - in the top photo she looks rather muddy and there could be some mud fever lurking underneath (feather doesn't necessarily protect from that); horses with feathers like that are more susceptible to mites as well, especially at this time of year.

Thanks for all the replies. I thought clip but my partner whos buying her likes the feathers but I agree shes not really heavy enough to leave them. I would leave her mane though, as you can always plait it.

Take 'em off! She's not chunky enough to suit hairy...

What they said. She's not really heavy enough and would look much better trimmed up with a nicely pulled mane (I wouldn't hog her as I think a short, pulled mane would look nicer)

I personnally prefer to see cobs with long mane feather and full thick tail. She is a lovely horse but her mane looks a bit thin so i would clip her legs out. If you then think she looks better with them on they will soon grow back. Also feather take some looking after to keep them looking right. My horses that i have(i have had 2 gypsy cobs with full hair) takes a while to keep right, my horses without feather are a lot quicker to brush but they have less protection in the winter than my cob does.
As for showjumping i used to take my old gypsy cob showjumping and cross country with full mane, tail and lots of feather and we used to gets of compliments about how good she looked :D

I'd clip too. My previous coloured a similar build and probably very similar bone, he looked a bit silly when he had feathers as he couldn't carry them off very well - I kept his clipped out and he looked a million times better. She is lovely by the way, will look stunning without the fluff. I personally wouldn't hog her though.

If I trimmed all the long hair off with scissors first, would I need proper clippers or would trimmers be good enough? Am a little clueless in this department as always had thoroughbred type horses .

I think you would need to invest in some proper clippers, and make sure you have a few sets of blades as well! Do you know if she's good to clip?

You need proper clippers, clipping greasy feathers can really take its toll on blades. Where abouts in East Anglia are you, I have a set of clippers and blades I use for mine if you're not too far away?

We learnt to do a very tidy scissor cut with our cob as he just couldn't bear clippers on his legs unless he was heavily sedated. It took ages and was a bit back- breaking.
Feathers are a lot of work and I think they are better suited to a heavier cob than yours.
Trimmers couldn't cope with our boy's hair even after the scissors took the worst off but his hair was very coarse.

I think the fluffy feathers makes your new horse more cute! :)
But, in general, I like to see horse legs with a little feathers.

:o I often think fluff is cute...
