Hi Guys

What do you think - should I ride my in foal mare ?? I'm not talking jumping or even trotting for that matter - just a tootle around the block once a week !

Now she has always been a bit of a napper but she is soooo chilled out now she's in foal that I can't help but wonder if she might behave herself, She's only about 8/9weeks gone so not heavy yet

I'm torn !

(one of the reasons I am breeding from her is because I couldn't be bothered with her random hissy fits anymore, I'm getting to old for it at 26 lol, I don't have another horse)

Advice and opinions appreciated as my OH just shrugs his shoulders and goes "I dunno "

Sorry im hopeless i dont know the first thing about horses in foal! But hope everything goes ok with foal and mum!

I rode mine until 5 months and I'm sure she'd have kept going quite happily. We cantered and occasionally jumped and everything!!

My mare was fit and in work when she got in foal and carried on hacking (getting gradually gentler and gentler) untill she was too big to do it comfortably, maybe 8 or 9 months - short slow walks by this point of course! I'd say it depends on her current fitness level to some extent but she should hardly notice for the first few months anyway.

I would, i used to ride our pregnant mares out hacking until it was best not to at around 6/7 months i reckon on average, its only the last trimester like with women that they get bigger generally in my experience. Gentle plodding never did mine any harm, and I would be surprised if it did your any harm
