To rug or not to rug, that is the question

My oldie who has always been a chilly pony has just started being rugged at night. Her field mates will not be rugged for ages yet. I am in the south.

My lad (welsh) is not rugged in winter anymore and this time of year is the hardest because his winter coat is no where to be seen but it has turned cold and wet. He does have a stable to stand in to get out of the worst of the weather and he never seems cold but I do worry. On really bad days when it is constant rain and cold and he has no winter coat through I will leave him a bit of hay in his stable to nibble on and keep some warmth being generated.
He is fine once his coat comes through, but it is just this tricky period.

Baran, I have a degree in Equine Science and have been a yard manager so i am definitely not some numpty!! ;) I was just wondering what everyone else was doing at this time of year with the change of weather. If you found it to be a pointless post why did you reply?! ;)

Update on my TB - still naked, I'm hoping to wait another couple of weeks.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you were a numpty. I am simply baffled by these repeated posts on rugging. The weather varies widely throughout the UK and horses differ in their abilities to withstand temperature changes. So what is the relevance of anyone else's rugging strategy?
