To sell or Not to sell

So I currently have 3 horses(1 retired) and my two riding horses.
My older mare is rising 15 next year and shes my main competition horse( ex eventer, now showjumping 120/130)
I bought her half sister from breeder 3 years ago unbroken with the thoughts that in time If my older mare wanted to slow down, the younger mare would take over.
Older mare showing no signs, and younger mare showing no signs of ever being as capable as her sister.

So now I have come to this predicament, do I keep the younger mare(Shes safe, sensible, fun and pretty and only 6!) and just compete her with what shes able for, Or do I sell her to someone who she may become everything they have ever dreamed of?

For me, she will always and ever be #2!

Im mad about her, and the thoughts of her going make me heart hurt, but am I being selfish keeping her just for the things I can do with her that I cant do with her sister(Fun rides/showing etc)

Good god serious first world problems. :D
 
Sell a nice horse you like because someone might like her more...?!
If that's selfish I'd be selfish all day long!

Sounds like you have a competition horse and a fun horse 😊
Unless you're in a position that makes it necessary I wouldn't let her go.
The other consideration being if you did sell her how easy/hard would it be to find something as nice as her if you changed your mind and wanted to replace her. Sounds like it might be tricky based on your description....

I'm with the others, if you like the horse and aren't looking to compete at such a high level in the future then definitely keep her.

Also are you potentially comparing apples and pears? As in are you comparing how your young and less experienced horse feels compared to your experienced horse? Could it be that if you compared how your older mare felt at 6 to how your current mare feels at 6 that there might not be as big a difference in ability as you think?

Maybe your right, My older mare was very difficult as young horse and took us a long time to find our groove, whereas this lady is so chill, its a breath of fresh air.
 
Sorry to resurrect this thread.
But I did in fact advertise my lovely young mare, she has been on sale now for over a month and only one person has viewed her.
I did price her maybe a little rich but I think shes worth it, some one contacted me today offered 5K less, and now Im here wondering is it worth keeping her rather than selling her for so little when she is so versatile.

I need you good people to steer me in the right direction....
(I also bought her replacement which was probably a bit hasty now thinking about it 🤣 🤣 )
 
From someone who sold a pony to the wrong people just because they were prepared to pay a bit more (I have an OH who thinks that my ponies are a money pit and I was determined to show him) and lived to regret it, I think if you like the people then perhaps try a haggle and sell. Don't underestimate the daily costs, which are eroding the "profit" every day.

The lady has told me she only has this much to spend and its 5K less than what I am asking, Im just trying to figure out if its worth keeping a horse thats not as talented for my own pleasure. 🤷‍♀️

I agree, I would have taken that money to some one I know and trust.
Id rather keep her and get the enjoyment out of her myself.
 
Im rubbish at selling horses, and tend to let them go to people i like / think they are suitable long term homes.( Rather than worry too much about the price). £5k off does seem a lot, but i guess it depends on what you are asking. its not a lot if shes £50k, but a lot if shes £15k, and down right rude if shes £8k 😆

I have her at 15K and their offering 10. I would have been ok at 12.5/13 realistically. But 10 is rude I think.
I have spent that and more on her over the years and probably get more enjoyment out of her than the 10k 🤷‍♀️

thats too much. Keep her and enjoy her until the right home comes along

I think your last statement speaks volumes, enjoy her, if someone comes along all good, but no pressure to sell.
