Hi,

I'm thinking of setting up a dressage training yard, with possibly a few full liveries as well. Is there anything I need to think of with regards to the law, and insurance etc? Anything else? I might come across something I haven't thought of yet.

Thanks!

Sarah

Your best source of reference would be the BHS. You could get their package on becoming an approved yard, it doesn't mean you have to apply to be approved, but will give you a good idea of what is expected and what is required

Insurance!!!! This is the most important thing you need before anything else and what a mine field it is but here goes! as a yard owner you have to have public liability in case someone injures themself whilst on your property. However, if you then wish to offer a service where you handle other peoples horses ie turning out etc you then have to have a further insurance cover called (CCC) Care, Custody & Control, this covers you if, for example, you are leading a livery's horse and it gets away from your control and injures itself then you are covered, if it gets away and causes an accident say with a car then your public liability covers you for damage to the car. The CCC cover only allows you to handle horses that do not exceed the value of £10k per horse (a lot of dressage horses are easily in excess of this!!) now here's the extra bit, if you are teaching then you have to take out a further cover called 'Teachers' insurance, if for instance, you advise a rider to do something whilst in your lesson and the rider falls off and injures themself then you are covered by your Teachers insurance NOT a public liability cover as most people think!! for all this you are looking at around £1100 per year. I just presumed I would only need Public Liability to cover my yard and livery services but spoke to my sister's equine solicitors where she works and he explained all this to me.
