Hi I noticed tonight that my mare has a bolding patch on her mane, its about 1/4 way up her neck and was wondering if it could be caused by her full neck rug rubbing. There is no redness or scabby skin, the hair is just very thin.

Anyone else encountered the same thing?

Yep, always had this problem when using a full neck. Even tried stitchin silk in to the underside to help reduce the friction - never helped. This year no neck cover = lovely mane.

Yep, happens a lot, there are lots of posts about it on here lol!!!

My lot usually suffer this but this year I've gone through stacks of mane and tail conditioner and coat gloss and it seems to have done the trick. The rugs seem to rub much less, which stands to reason!!!

Yes....my mares mane used to fall out due to the grease that was trapped under the neck (despite being bathed often for hunting etc). I have hogged her now!!

Yes, quite common. Depends on the horse too though. I've used the same rug on two different horses, on one it rubbed his mane & on the other it didn't.

well I have got a standard rug on her 2night and will do same 2mora, bloody typical shes grey and we have our first dressage comp in 2 weeks. Im gonna have a bold yellow horse!!! OOOHHH NOO!!

Most rugs will rub away some of the mane at the neck - A bit of cornucrescine will help

yep .not all rugs do .our grey mare has been fine in her turnout but as shes had a full neck stable rug on whilst it was really cold its rubbed her mane.frustrating isnt it.

Same here - Manni only has half a mane at the moment - and yet last winter in the smae rug, he was fine and didn't lose his mane.

Toby's not too bad - a bit thin at the wither end.

My mates beautiful cob who had a full thick long mane now only has half a mane from the poll to haldf way down its neck, she is devasted and asked what had happened.

When I mentioned it is likely to be becuase of the neck piece she immediately took it off.

My horse lost about 4 inches of his mane once through rubbing his neck as it got itchy with the neck piece but it has grown back now.

thanks for all your replies. Its not really too important that she has a neck cover, she is clipped but its really not that cold here, we are lucky on the south coast, doesnt snow. She normally wears it so I can keep her clean. Hopefully I have caught it early enough and its put me off combos for a while lol

Yes, my horse has lost a big chunk of his grey mane (not the black bits). If I had to plait him it would look horrendous.....I am tempted not to use a neck next year.
