I am a novice rider had my new forest pony who is now 17 years for two and a half years . He has brought my confidence on loads and is just fab but he is slowing down now so I went to view another horse to loan he's an 18 year old 17hh Hanovarian cross tb that the owner bred. He's a beautiful horse with great manners in and out of the stable , he's very responsive , hacks out alone or on his own and actually stops when asked. I've hacked him out twice with no problems down the quiet country roads we met a dog walker and a tractor with sprayer on and he was fine but today we were down a narrow road and a horse box came down then a milk wagon. We pulled on to the grass verge the owners mare was starting to play up and then he started to freak out as the milk wagon went past and I ended up coming off as he was kinda jumping side to side as we had nowhere to go as there was a stone wall to our side and his owner in front on her mare. He then trotted off then walked and we just gathered him up .I got back on him in the school although was a little nervous then the owner hacked him out and I walked with them and he was fine. I did really like this horse but now I don't know what to do

However lovely he is, if he doesn't give you every confidence you will have it in the back of your mind. If it had been your own horse you would have had the mental tools to do something about it, trust is everything.

There is a big difference between 17h warm blood and a new forest pony.

If you have been happy with your forester and he is slowing down due to his age why not try and look for a younger new forest.

If you are on facebook trying putting out an add on the new forest pony people facebook - you may find someone has something suitable locally but has not advertised on the open market.

There is also a northen new forests supporters group who may be able to help.

I agree with SO1. That is a big jump and a totally different ball game. It might take a while for something to come along, but keep your feelers out!

Maybe even look down the route of a different native breed of a similar size? Highland, Dales, Fell e.t.c.
