Hi,

I have taken over the ride on my mums section C gelding this year as previous jockeys have either been terrified of him ( not nasty but VERY strong and stocky ..) or they have started off really well on him, got cocky and then been rough with him ..

Issue is he is now very insecure .... He goes lovely in the go round in the ring but then get's very aggitated in the line, wont stand still .. then wont stand up for the judge ... goes bolshy in his show etc etc ....

The other issue is its not at every show ... its totally inconsistent ??? even with full work (4-5 days a week mix of school and hack) !!!

What do I do ?? A few people have suggested turning him away for 12 months and giving him a complete mental break others have said keep going ?! .. This isnt something that has just started this season .. its been a build up over prob 3-4 seasons now with about 4 jockey's on him ..

Any advice ? anyone had similar issues ???

thanks in advance !!

Test him for ulcers. If you can't afford to have him scoped, give him ranitidine for a few days and see how he changes. It will usually have an effect in about 48 hours if it's going to. Tesco own brand £1.38, a whole packet a day. It is a drug used in horses at around ten times that dose and safe. If it has an effect, omeprazole is a much better drug for curing them, but you will need a vet for that.
