Hello All
Had a really great day at the British Open today so wanted to post about it whilst it was still fresh in my mind and then I might manage to get some sleep!
I got home from the yard last Saturday to find two hospitality tickets to today's part of the British Open (having only entered the competition to win the tickets a few days before!) with no phone call telling me I'd won! I was quite chuffed - i never win anything!
So off we went with no idea what to expect other than knowing we were to wear smart clothes. We got there and had a wander round and went off to the hospitality area expecting a cup of tea and a wee rest before going off to find our seats. Except that wasn't the case at all!
We were escorted to our seats which were almost IN the arena- we were sat with our feet as good as in the sand and less than a metre from the entry for horses to the ring. Lots of glasses on the table and lots of cutlery too
A minute later a lady came and asked us if we would like to walk the course with a gentleman (don't think he was the builder/designer but he might have been) so off we went whilst the riders were walking it too (felt very out of place and awkward)
Back to our seats and 30 seconds later the champagne flute was filled, orange juice arrived, then water. Finally we were offered a glass of wine and our food order was taken
It was the MOST surreal feeling to be sat in all this finery with Tim Stockdale sailing past, with me with a knife in one hand and a fork in the other- they were practically kicking the table cloth when they went by! Needless to say dinner got cold as we were clapping and cheering on the edge of our seats rather than eating! Watching it all was amazing. I was sat on the end of the table which was right by the door where the horses and riders entered the arena and John Whitaker stood about 3 feet away watching lots of other riders compete once he'd been round. Another surreal moment when arm's length away was John Whitaker decked from top to toe in his own brand of clothing!
Anyway I didn't take any pics of the jumping as it was too much sitting there watching nevermind anything else and I'd have felt so awful snapping away from the sideline
So I stealthily snuck some silent phone shots in as they were leaving the ring.
Here they are
It was a bit hard to see who they were but Jessica Kurten is in there and I think Ben Maher was in there too. I know I saw Ellen Whitaker and Tim Gredley (thanks Mat for clarifying that!
)
The dressage to music display was very very good and we had to leave after that to catch our train home so missed the final jumping class
But had a great day out!
