After 20odd years of having horses in the same area I took my 10yrold daughter out on 12.2hh pony around the same VERY busy main roads that i ride on and used to ride on alone! when i was her age and a little younger on a 11.1hh my first ever pony prone to a good buck

and thaught nothing of any danger no one ever minded that i was gone or where i exactly was (my parents have never been horsey and they tried to help sometimes as best they could but mostly left me to it untill i wanted picking up to go home )
I would never dream of letting my daughter do such a thing now after a car passed us at 60mph it left me quite shocked that i ever did such things at the same age and never gave it a seccond thaught ,i was the only child on a yard full of adults so entertained myself quite alot my mother would probly be horrified!!! now if i ever told her i used to go jump the dikes and such plus meet up with friends from other yards and canter along the grass next to the roads

ahhh the halycon days of taking off at 8am with a marmite sandwich in your pocket and everyone being happy that you would come home when it was either dark or you were hungry

my mum used to send me off on my 'new' pony. "off you go dear, have fun"
little did she know as soon as we were out of sight my pony would force and bully me into cantering the whole way round. i used to just sit, grip and cry the whole way round!! then dry my eyes before i got back and make out i had a fab time!!

she ended up being my horse of a lifetime but i only recently told my mum about the antics-she felt awful!!! what mums don't know eh!!!

the roads are sooo much busier now but its not just that ,drivers are more in a hurry and either dont realise about horses or dont care somtimes they drive past at speed on purpose. we have a very busy road through our village especialy in summer, one day daughter was riding through , indicated to turn right and stopped the car behind was so close, pony lifted her tail and deposited right on his bonnet !!
