As some of you may know my cob bailey was diagnosed with arthritis last summer and we have had a long old winter trying to keep him comfortable and happy. Since his diagnosis we have done very very little schooling opting to hack instead as its less pressure on his joints.

Today I was having a lesson on another horse and at the end decided to tack bailey up and have my instructor look at how he was moving. SHe promptly kicked me off and got on herself and Bailey did 15 mins of beautiful work in all three gaits. To see him moving so freely and offering a contact and a nice shape was enough to bring a tear to my eye.

To all those with arthritic horses, bailey is proof that with careful management and pain relief they can still live the life they led before their diagnosis. Dont give up hope!! So pleased for my little ginger nut :-) :-) :-)

Lovely pics and great news. I have a 16 year old who was diagnosed with arthritis in various joints at 9. He is mainly hacked, but still has the odd lessons. He struggled with the last winter as it went on for sooooo long, but since being back out 24/7, is doing really well again.

Ooooo I am sure I remember a vid of him and he looked very uncomfortable!? Pics look lovely, seems you are getting everythin right for him! Best of luck and hope it continues!

Thats great news for you, its so nice to have positives, makes you feel a lot better. I know how you feel, I had the Physio today for a mare we sold 4yrs ago then were given back last Winter because of kissing spines. She can't believe the difference in 5 weeks since she last saw her. We now have the go ahead to ride. Makes all the hard work of hand walking and pole work worthwhile.

Great newa. My old girl was diagnosed with arthritis at 13, she carried on working, doing RC and PCrfor another 10 years and only retired 18 months ago when carrying weight on turns became difficult for her.
