The new mare has clouted the Appy on her upper front leg/ shoulder area. The poor appy is now lame with a lump and a cut. It was her own fault as this morning we took the rugs off in the field, sister held the new mare while I took all three rugs off. We then made our way out of the field, new mare followed sister and Appy followed her, stupid Appy then shoved her nose under the new mares tail! New mare pulled her face and the ridiculous Appy did it again. New mare glared at her, Appy did it again, New mare then walloped her. There is a small cut which has bled a lot and she is very stiff. We have spoken to the vet, given her two bute and washed the wound with garlic and salt water and seperated them again until the Appy is a bit more sound. Hope things are a bit better tomorrow. Keeping horses is supposed to be my stress felief from a stressful job

Thank you, ours are out, the Appy is now hopping as her middle weight turnout rug is touching the lump

She will be better out as she stiffens more if standing still, but not a happy bunny.

i brought my new horse home today, turned him out in field and within half an hour he had taken a bad kick to his hind leg, fortunatly hes not lame on it. hope your appys leg is ok though.

Oh my God, Kazs, what a nightmare, glad he is not lame! I'm sure the Appy will be fine, what a weekend to pick though, we were so looking forward to taking the two of them out.

It is a brilliant antiseptic and in the past when we have used it on wounds it has stopped the hair growin back white. It also seems to promote quicker healing. It is our alround miracle cure!

Do you disolve garlic powder or used crushed garlic or what?

I bet it helps keep the flies off too?

is it a bit like honey acts on a wound?
never knew that it could act that way

We use garlic powder dissolved in warm water, does work in a similar way to honey, but discourages flies as well. WE discovered this all by accident when using an old garlic tub for the water for washing another mares leg about 15 years ago. It healed very quickly (was a nasty injury) and as a bonus the hair grew back black. It was in fact hard to find the scar afterwards.
