I recently had to retire my TB due to injury I then took a 19 yr old Trakenher gelding who is still very active.

I have had him 3 weeks and we have mainly just been out hacking including cantering galloping around the countryside and he has been very well behaved .

So today we went to do a sponsored ride with 2 friends on sensible horses. there weren't many entries as weather was awful and we went last so couldn't see the horses ahead.

Off we went I went in front as my horse walks a bit faster all fine walked round the side of the first field then down a track into the next field got the bottom wasn't sure which way to go so stopped to wait for my friends who were a few strides behind we decided which way to go and I squeezed horse who decided not to move so I squeezed harder , nothing except trying to go backwards. So agreed with friend for her to come past and lead the way they went past my horse kept trying to go backwards so at this point I was kicking pony club style and then before I knew what was going on he reversed at 100mph reared right up I came off one side and luckily he went the other way but got straight up.

So I decided to retire got back to the trailer in tears un-tacking horse when a lady comes over asks horses name as she knows him ,asked what happened then grabbed my bridle off me and said the bit was to blame as it was to strong ! It's a tom thumb I think in any case it's what he has been ridden in up until now so I didn't think it wise to suddenly change everything which I explained to said lady through my tears. (She is lucky I was so upset or I probably would have told her where to go!) I can take advice and comments but she doesn't know me and didn't see what happened and I don't think I would have spoken to someone like that at that particular moment ??

Anyway we got home and later that day I rode out with YO and he was as good as gold if a little stiff but we only walked and glad I did it today for my confidence.

He used to hunt and from what I hear he used to get rather excited so I am guessing he thought he was back there, think I will stick to dressage.

Large glass of wine for everyone who has listened to my whingeing :-)

Not nice day. Glad your ok- and horse- although i would get him checked out by vet/physio just to be safe. Understand you needed to ride for confidence but maybe not best idea after he fell too.
That lady sounds a bit interfering- fun rides can do strange things to horses and yes maybe he remembered hunting.
Hope you have more fun in future.
