We purchased a scottie pup at the end of March and we're having a nightmare toilet training him. We have a cage for him for when we're out / at night and when he's in there he doesn't mess. The rest of the time he runs round the house loose. We take him out every hour or so but frequently, with no warning, he will go in the house. This beautiful but wilfull pup is driving me insane! All suggestions gratefully received.....

Firstly, don't let him have unfettered access to all your house. Shut doors behind you or get a child gate. Is your garden secure? If so, leave the back door open so he has free access to the garden. If he goes in the house and you catch him at it, point your finger at him and say gruffly "naughty boy". Clean the mess up. If you don't catch him, ignore him and clean the mess up. If he goes outside you must, must be estatic and praise him to high heaven, "good boy, good boy". If you can leave the back door open it will make it so much easier. If he eats your plants and digs your pots up, it is a small price to pay in the long run. Dogs bladders mature at different rates, and need to go frequently, he just needs to know that in the house is unacceptable to you. He is already crate trained, so he is aware of where he can go. Just persevere. And be patient!

The crate is a small confined place where by if he passes motions he has to practically sit ontop of it...this is how the crate trains them...dogs are usually pretty clean and don't like sitting in their own produce

It's sounds as though you are giving him to much space to add lib to when he is out of the crate...i.e he can dump one where he likes and walk away...and u have to clean it up

he does not even have to venture back near to it...as he can run off and find a clean space to play in...is this making sense....also...if he begins to pass a motion and you are not in the vacinity...u cannot break the act by picking him up and taking him to his designated [****] zone...i.e the garden

When you release him from the crate...this is the time he will be most desperate for a doo doo...take him straight to the garden...no fuss, straight out..carry him if need be...if he is a wonder and chooses to head in another direction

this will get him into a routine of crate to garden....watch him from the window and when he is passing a motion...wait till he is nearing the end and go out and treat/praise him and give a command i.e wee wees pooh poohs e,t,c

In the house...always keep him in the room you are in...do not let him out of your sight..this way...like mentioned you can correct the motion as you are able to see it.
You are giving him to much free reign to soon...hope this makes sense

Good luck

Try placing some puppy pads near to the door in which ever room he is in...if her heads for them...atleast he is heading in the right direction and you can act quicker to get him out...and less for you to clean if you don't get to him in time and he pittles on the pad
