Our 5 month old Italian Spinone puppy is struggling with her toilet training overnight. During the day we have it pretty much cracked, but only because we take her out very regularly, there can sometimes be a puddle if we leave it too long. She never, in the house, asks to go outside. If we are in the workshop (where she's also had accidents), she will sit by the door to go out.

Anyhow, the problem is night time. Dogs are now in their own bed at night (have evicted them from our bed). They both go outside sometime between 10-11pm. The other Spin who is 5 has always been amazing since the age of 12 weeks, and goes straight out and does a wee and comes in. Puppy will faff and wander around. Sometimes she goes and sometimes she doesn't. We don't play with her, just stand and watch.

The problem is that every morning for the last week I've been greeted by a number 1 and 2 in the hall way by the door. This has happened even on the nights when I've woken up between 2-3am and taken her outside. She doesn't make a noise to go outside or let us know she needs too.

Both dogs sleep in our room, we live in a bungalow, so the hallway and door are right outside our room. Am pleased she recognises the door as on the way to outside, but how do we break this cycle?

Has she ever been clean through the night? if not I would get her checked by a vet just to make sure there is not physical reason she would not be able to be clean for that length of time.

do you actually walk the dogs at 10-11pm or just let them out? i would walk them to encourage the bowel into motion by movement and her to actually need to go at that time.

What time is she fed? I always feed my dogs last thing at night after a last short lead walk of say 20mins so after 10pm, that has always worked for me as they have been excersised, toileted and fed and they dont need to go to toilet again before the morning-obviously a puppy may need to go very early but out toilet and bed, it is not too bad

does your other dog crowd her when she goes out in the garden/could she be feeling intimidated in the garden and that preventing her from going.

After that:

I would crate her and use a product like urineoff to clean the areas where she has been to toilet in the house before.
let her out at night every 2-3hrs paying attention to wether she goes to toilet or not-keep heron a lead and keep it calm and quiet, take her out give her the oppotunity to 'be clean' quiet praise when she has been and give a treat, then back in and in the crate. once you have had one or two clean night start lengthening the gaps slowly be 15 mins or so each time. once you get to the stage she is clean on one outdoor visit stick and that for a while until she is a bit older. If she is not waking you it sounds like she thinks it is ok to go when and where she needs to in the bungalow you need to re-educate her.

^^ this, a crate will really help you and going out with a lead on each time (in the day you can praise and then take the lead off after she has done it )
Mine don't ask to go out but will wait until I let them out, it did take a bit longer because of this and I had to be vigilant at 5 months because of it.
