My horse is starting to get really naughty at getting his tongue over his bit. We have tried other bits, have tightened his flash noseband, but to no avail. My friend (a very experienced hunter) has suggested using a rubber tongue layer which looks ok on Robinsons website. She has seen it work with some of her liveries however she never competes so has no idea if it is legal with BD and BE. Its starting to get quite dangerous, so I need to find a solution asap but don't want to use anything that means I can't compete him in it.

Does anyone have a suggestion or know the answer?

They are legal for eventing (jumping) but not for dressage (not legal in the dressage for eventing either). I tried a tongue layer on mine and he hated it. However, he goes absolutely brilliantly in this:

I ride him in it all the time except for dressage tests (he doesn't seem to realise and hasn't put his tongue over the bit in a test yet). They're not expensive so maybe worth a go.

I had a MAJOR problem with my mare regarding this, to the point where I was so frustrated she was going back in foal!!! I went for a lesson with Spencer, we took the flash off, tightened the cavesson (now got crank) and lifted the bit by one hole on each side.

She is no longer fighting the pressure coming from under her mouth from the flash and is so settled... I never imagined she would have been better with less, but I am now thoroughly convinced that this is something you should try in this situation.

Han used to get her tongue over at least twice every training session, and now I have had 2 lessons and taken her in the school three times with success!

thanks for that. I had forgotten about grakles, might do the trick. My old boy did it once out hacking, he frightened himself so much (he was a bit of a control freak) he never did again. New boy seems to just do it as something to do! Will dig out grakle and give it a go
