i have a 16h cleveland bay who has started getting his tongue over the bit.. He is in a wondergag at present and has his teeth done regularly. He can be quite strong and even more so when he does this. Any suggestions???

I presume you have tried the route of a flash noseband or a grakle to keep the jaw shut, and stop him be able to move his mouth enough to get his tongue over?

It's an evasion - pure and simple (my 17.2h warmblood used to spend 90% of his time with his tongue over the bit!!! we are still working on it!) For instant results, try a rubber tongue guard or a plated bit (with a metal tongue guard as part of the port of the bit, if that makes sense?).

The only real solution is schooling to help him to accept the bit correctly in his mouth and be "true" in his mouth - this takes time and effort - mine still sticks his tongue out if he's tired or doesn't want to do something!

Grakles need to be tight and correctly fitted on the bridge of the nose.

Have you tried a pelham? might help to get him to listen without the action of a gag? maybe phone some of the bit banks for advice before you start spending money....?

Good luck,

Catherine

Poor old Blue went through this in her youngerdays--ports that got higher and higher, flash nosebands that got tighter and tighter (one person even tried tieing it shut with bandage. It got so I gave up as I could not stand it any longer and did not think it was worth torturing her any more
years later we've solved the problem

For those that haven't noticed--NO BIT!

I have used a KK correction bit successfully on a couple of horses who did this. They rhen went on to accept snaffles with no fuss.
