tongue question

don't know if anybody can help with info! my friend has just purchased an ex race horse. he's lovely, nice and sensible - now going to have a nice year out - just gentle hacking before starting on some schooling. thing is he had an accident in a horse walker and has lost half of his tongue. how would this effect his ridden work re breathing? and what bits would be usefull or would a bitless bridle be a good idea?

We have a hunt horse that lost half its tongue when it was sticking it out and another horse bit it off ( I am being DEADLy serious!!). Horse is fine - copes totally fine.
