i noticed riding my Section D the other day that her tongue appeared to be sticking out of the sides of her mouth. She was in a frenchlink fullcheek snaffle before i got her and I have her in the same mouthpeice with eggbutt cheeks. She gave me no indication she was uncomfy in her mouth and is just in a cavesson noseband. However Im wondering if this is an indication the bit is a little too thick for her mouth and she might be better with something thinner? I know they dont have a lot of room in their mouths anyway and have fleshy tongues. Or is the tongue thing nothing to worry about?

She is telling you that she is uncomfortable in her mouth. Lucky for her that you are listening - a lot of people would just stick a noseband on, sadly. Try giving the bitbank a call - I have heard really good things about them and they can give great advice tailored to your horse as they ask all the right questions about your horse's mouth conformation and so on to help you find the exact right bit.

thanks, i did wonder - ive practically got my own bitbank lol. Ive got a nice myler comfort snaffle i might try her in. Just wondered if it was a sign of uncomfortableness or a habit as ive not seen it before as she doesnt show any fussiness in her mouth.

I had a mare that stucks out her tounge when working proberly. Had all the checks one, back numberous times, poll, new saddles. different bits, nosebands, teeth. You name it she did did it. Even tried a bit less which she still stuck it out in that.
Tried different riders the works.

In the end the vet settled on her having a virus as a foal that wasn't treated or was very bad, leaving her with narrowed nasal tubes. Which would get backed up with discharge so when working on the bit her head was at a position that caused the passways to narrow.

In the end we just didn't ask her down. The only thing she did was stuck out her tounge. But there is a reason for it. It took us ages to get to bottom of hers, and even then it's not 100%.

Oddly enough I've seen those cameras that look at the nasal passways when the horse is in work, would look to have a look at her with one. But sadly I sold her on a few years ago.

thank you for the replies... her teeth were recently done and all fine

i rode her in a my myler comfort snaffle today and, presto! Didnt see her tongue :)
