I was working at Uttoxeter the day he got his 2000th winner and interviewed him that day for my local newspaper and all he could talk about was his admiration for former champion Richard Dunwoody. I really like AP because I don't think he truly believes just how good he is. Some other sporting professionals ( in racing too) are so far up their own arse they could probably even brush their teeth. But Tony just comes across as a really down to earth and hard working guy, who seems in awe of being champion.
I remember the day he got his 2000th winner. He just wanted to get on with his job and ride winners. It was just another day at the office for him and he came across as though he couldn't get his head around what all the fuss was about.
The press were around him like flies that day, even the tabloids which you very rarely saw at the Midlands track, if ever. He seemed as though he hated the fuss being made of him to be honest.
I think when he got that record that day he was most probably relieved so that people would leave him alone.
I cannot even imagine what it must have been like for him this last week when he has been chasing his 3000th!
Poor guy, I bet he has been hassled to death.
As a former journalist I used to try and respect people's privacy, and really don't condone anyone being hounded at all. It is so wrong in my opinion. I think a lot of journalists and their newspapers seem to forget sometimes that their subjects are human and as such do have feelings.
I have the utmost respect for Tony and always will. He is a true gent, a fabulous jockey and a fantastic mascot for National Hunt racing. Please tell me when are the BBC going to recognise this man's talents? It is about time he bloody won a BBC Sports Personality title!

'It couldn't be wetter, it couldn't be colder, he's starving to bits, but he can go and ride finishes like that. '
that is AP summed up, he is a total sportsman, the best we will ever see, total legend

I think that most years.. how many years running has he been champion jockey?? i don't think anyone has been champion of any sport for as long as he has..
Surely the BBC can't ignore him this year..

Oh fab. I heard on the radio that he'd got 2999 but that he'd fallen at the last when clear in the lead. Dedn't realise there was a race left to go. Well done Tony, don't suppose we'll see another one!

You and I think alike then because it pains me that jockeys don't get the recognition they deserve especially when you see some of the people who have collected the title over the years.
I too think the same thing. How many years does one have to prove how bloody good one is in their job within the sport's industry in order to be nominated for that title!
I just wonder if the beeb are waiting for him to win that elusive Grand National? Winning that race is hard though for any jockey. Even the best form horse in the race may not take to the fences or have terrible luck in running. Throughout the time I have been watching and backing in the race since about 1983 the best horses have not always won.
I think the Irish have had the better luck in the race compared to the Brits during the last ten years so maybe if AP can get the leg up on an Ire trained horse and be allowed to get off a JP McManus owned one he may just have a chance.
Even if AP fails to add the GN to his CV this season it should not detriment his chances of winning a sports personality award in my opinion.
I think the champ jockey has proved his worth already over the years to show that he is long overdue that trophy.
Doh just realised it wasn't the 2000th winner he got at Uttoxeter it was his 1,700 to beat Dunwoody's record. Silly me lol. Serves me right for trying to do two things at once and not concentrating. Yes it was 1,700. To think he is now on 3,000, it is remarkable especially as the winners have not always been firing from O'Neill's yard in recent years.

Some man.

He did 10-4 to ride the filly that fell, and looked as if he had a nosebleed when he walked in. Even NH looked scared to talk to him, lol!!

I've changed my opinion of him over the years, and now he is the consummate jockey, not a bullying one.

We will never see the likes again, not in my lifetime. And it is a glaring omission that he's not been more widely lauded outside the sport. Mebbe C4 need to instigate a Sports Personality. Lets face it the Beeb's racing coverage is paltry at best these days.

Respect, AP.

GTF I can see this topic being raised on next Saturday's morning line.
I have just read that AP was awarded a MBE in the Queen's birthday honours in 2003. Could we not perhaps see a greater recognition than this?
I certainly think that in some time in the future, maybe when AP decides to retire from the saddle that he will be knighted.
Although if knighthood of a jockey is dependant on the number of winners and being champion then AP still has some way to go to match the record of Sir Gordon Richards the only jockey to have been knighted. The late Sir Richards who died in 1986 - as a then successful National Hunt trainer- was champion jockey on the flat 26 times and rode an amazing 4,870 winners between 1921 and 1954 ( source BBC Sport)
