Current horse is a pretty consistent size 6'6 for most rugs.

Spotted a really reduced fleece rug at saddlers yesterday but it was a 6'9, got it thinking I could use afetr work over winter, wouldn't really matter if it got grubby or wrecked.

It fits on his neck and depth wise, is just long (half way down dock - have taken fillet string off as it was a little low) - it has cross over surcingles which tighten up short enough to keep it secure.

A girl on the yard has said a too long rug is really dangerous and I should only ever use a rug the exact right size as he could injury himself.

I just can't see how he could injury himself on a fleece rug especially as it will only be on for a maximum of 30 minutes whilst I'm on the yard.

Am I just not seeing something here?

the extra weight down the back will pull on the chest shoulders and wither making him sore, also if its too long he could end up with it under his hocks when laying down/ getting up,
cant you fold the rear up double and then sew it if you dont want to take it back?

Thanks for the reply curio.

I can understand what you're saying but it will be on him for 30 mins max after work - he'll be to interested in waiting for his tea to lie down (and doesn't roll in his stable) and it surely wouldn't be on long enough to pull back enough to make him sore.

You're right though - should just get the sewing kit out!

If it's only on 30 minutes while you're around I can't see the problem. If you lift the rug up on the middle of his back so it's not pulling on his withers I think it will be fine.

i'd pull it forward so it's looseish at the front when you put it on. no way is it dangerous if it's only fleece, it would easily rip. NZs might be dangerous if they're huge on a horse, but not a fleece! i tend to grab the first cooler i can find and have often put big ones on small horses with no problems!

tumble dry it you will be lucky if it fits 12.2 pony after that thats what i did with my fleece i washed it first it a lovely size now maybe a little small but better than dragging on the stable floor

This! I bought a lovely wool newmarket rug for B that turned out to be far too large around her shoulders but a quick spin in the washing machine shrank it to the perfect fit. It stretches out again eventually with wear but washes up lovely each time.

What kind of material is it? Could you take it up by a few inches at the back, either by sewing it or using an iron-on hem just to double it over?

Thanks for the re-assurance and suggestions people, used it on him today after a hack as we got totally rained on - he and rug were fine. Did want you said sunnymane and it wasn't even that long anymore.

Will also try the tumble dryer trick if I need to

I dont think it'd be an issue at all. You're only using it after work for 30 mins and you'll be around anyway! Would be different if you were leaving on all night or something. I really wouldn't worry.
