Have been talking to a girl I know att he stables I go to and she told me that I am far too big to ride JJ

The YO Liz said I'm fine on him and he needs a strong rider to hold him but this girl has really got me thinking.

JJ is around 128- 130cm (don't know what that is in hands, about 12.2 -13hh though not sure) and he is very head strong. He only gets ridden at weekends unless I ride him in the week if I can.

I'm just under 5 foot 4 and weight 9 stone.

Am I too big for him.

This is the most recent picture I have of me on him...
I know hes fat! And my position isn't that good. I also usually have my stirrups about 2-3 holes lower than that, but I hate that saddle (my bum is nearly as big as it!) so put them up.

And having a nice, sort of controlled canter. he hate sbeing ridden on his own. It meanshe has to work!

You may be a little leggy for him but you are no way to heavy!!
He’s quite a chunky lad. Please don’t listen to what other people say, I sold my pony Ella because I was told I was too big for her (which I wasn’t, she was 14’3hh and I am 5ft6) and I did regret it.

Tbh i think you need to know what his weight limit is. Bean's is 10 stone, she can carry that comfortably, vet told us on vetting. YO knows best, its her pony!! If you're at a decent yard then she will know her stuff. You look a little tall on him, but he is a sturdy chap...so who knows!!

Yeah I know that I'm quite leggy on him, but to get him working the legs have to be round him really.

He can't have little kids on him because he just takes the mick.

One of mine is 12.2hh; I am over 40; I am 5'8"; my legs are 33 inches long and I weigh 8 and a half stone......and I still ride her from time to time.

Who cares! Tell girl to mind her own business - you love your pony and that is all that matters.

If he sinks into the sand when you mount, and he needs dug out when you get off you've got a problem...
Nah, you are fine on him - perhaps the other girl is jealous of your riding or just s*** stirring?!

Another expert tip - you say he's 129cm tall now...measure him again in a couple of months...and if he's less than that...perhaps start riding a Shire?

Seriously, you look like you have a nice position on him, and you're so light you won't do him any harm at all.
Sounds like he goes well for you.

you are fine on him. just think that he could drive a cart with a full grown man on it!!! the girl would call you cruel if you didn't exercise him and he got laminitis!!! tell her to mind her own business xxx lovely looking pony by the way xx

Thanks. The measuring stick got snapped a couple of years ago on camp.

I think this will be my last year riding him and then I'm going to start riding a few of the bigger ones. I don't like heights. falling off JJ hurts way less!!!

You're absolutely fine on him!

You can tell he can be a little sod just by looking at him - its written all over his face!!!

I've always ridden ponies, even shetlands at the height I am now (5'2", admittedly I was a little lighter!) because some do need a more capable rider at times! I also understand the problems encountered regarding stirrup length and small saddles on such ponies!

Well I'm 5'4'' and 7 1/2 stone and I regularly ride our 13hh NF, my mum rides her too and she's probably about 9 stone. You look fine on him. Your legs are a tiny bit long but you definitely aren't too heavy for him. He's quite chunky and if he's strong a smaller rider would probably struggle with him. Don't listen to the girl at your yard, I'm sure your YO is far more experienced.

No, you're not too big for him. You may find you need to ride a little shorter if you're schooling, just re the length of your leg compared to his girth, but otherwise if you're both happy then that's the most important thing.

My sister is 5"3 and 9 stone and she still hunter trials, hunts, ODEs our pony Teazle (when shes in work) and she is only 13.2. You may be a little leggy but you are no way too heavy for him.

you are tall for him, which some people may see as to big - but you are not. weight is the issue when a rider is to big, not the length of your legs !!! you look good together.

ignore them

Just a general point:

The height of a pony has nothing to do with its weight-carrying ability. This is determined by the amount of bone the pony has.

For example, the rule-of-thumb I was always taught is that a pony/horse (of any height) with 8 inches of bone can carry up to an absolute maximum of 13 stone (including all tack, rider's heavy clothing, etc, so does not mean a 13-stone rider - more like a 12-stone rider to be safe, and that would be the maximum: if the horse/pony is v old or v young, or in poor condition, or has conformation weaknesses, etc., it should not be expected to carry the maximum for its bone).

A pony can be quite chunky-looking (or just fat) and still be fairly light of bone, so it's always worth measuring the bone to get a better idea of how much weight is OK.

If you are at all concerned I would measure the pony's bone (circumference of the front leg just below the knee - sorry if you already know this!). Then weigh yourself in full riding gear with the saddle. I would say this pony is unlikely to have more than 7 inches of bone at most (although impossible to tell from a photo, of course), so I wouldn't want to ask him to carry any more than a 9-stone rider plus tack.

He's at a RS and there isn't a set of scales there and I can't take the saddle home for obv reasons.

The YO and my instructors said its fine for me to ride him but this girl got me thinking which led to this post.

I also noted viewing this post, the people who said I was too big for him haven't commented.

Lol Eve. I wear one because of a serious fall I had a few years back and because JJ tends to buck and attempt to get me off. Naughty boy
