I am hoping to do an obedience test with B next month - one element is a 'sit in motion' and a 'down in motion' where I walk ten paces with him at heel, give command, he stops dead where he is either in the 'sit' or 'down' and I walk a further 20 paces without breaking stride and then either collect him from the sit or call him to me from the down.

The little fecker can count.
Once I get to eight strides he starts to slow down and lag behind and by nine he is slinking into his position without me telling him to....

AAARRRGGGHHHH!

Anybody else's dog too bloody smart for their own good this week?

Evie can't count, but have taught her in the past week to do a twirl (I know bit heelwork to music but it was something different). She now uses it as a diversionary tactic when I am about to tell her off, e.g. at training tonight she was supposed to do a drop on recall just in front of a titbit on the floor, little sod stopped but then shuffled forward and nicked the treat, and then spun like a blooming top when I went to tell her off and put her back in the correct position.

The Malinois at our club does a 'commando crawl' - handler turns his back and walks away, dog follows, he turns round, dog stops.
I agree with the dog, he IS still in a 'down'........
 
I actually think we may as well give up, they are just cleverer than us. I am NOT going to film the little madam, she would be convinced she is a superstar if I did that. Had someone different taking class tonight, suffered a sense of humour failure when Evie was doing her party trick, although everyone else burst out laughing me included which didn't go down well with instructor either

Very proud of my elderly special needs pointer who this evening managed to obey the command 'sit' a tiny bit. She very nearly got her bottom on the floor and that's taken all of 12 years!

My Lakeland terrier, however, is a genius - if you point 2 fingers at him and say 'bang' he ends up on the floor on his back with all 4 legs in the air.

That's training for you.............
 
Our house is up a flight of stairs and Otto finds the lure of the garden too strong and I have to go down the stairs to fetch him, being a lazy sod I started giving him a biscuit everytime he came in by himself.
He has now learnt that when my OH takes him outside, if he flies down the stairs, round the garden and back in the house without doing anything, OH gives him a biscuit. This can go on for several minutes before he actually goes to the loo! Sod training the dog, it's the OH that needs the work!

He also does the "entire-repitoire-in-5-seconds" manovure, sit, down, sit, paw, other paw, both paws, down all the way down, etc etc

I've got a couple of "too smart, ya little bars***" moments with my min poodle.

My usual routine every day is hit the alarm, get up, feed the dogs. Sometimes the poodle is on the floor next to the stand where the alarm is. Often I find him watching me. Sunday morning, trying to have a lie in. I hear a vague scraping sound next to me - I look over at the alarm to see the time to find there's Merlin, poking the clock with his nose. It worked - I got up and fed the dogs! hahah

However, better than that last week I was finished with all the clients dogs earlier than usual. I don't like to leave the shop before "closing time" so I was sitting at the pc doing some stuff (er, probably browsing HHO

) and I let him run loose round the shop. He was bouncing round the shop in his usual poodley manner. I could hear him climb on top of his cage behind me, where I keep my shop keys, my car keys and his leash. Ignore him a few more minutes. I turn round to find the keys and leash were all placed in a neat pile by the front door, ready to go home!

I think he's sussed out how to communicate with me....

The latest was him asking for the rest of his supper. He's a bit funny about eating all his tea sometimes. He'd rather go out and play. So in order to keep the other two dogs from eating it all, I lift it and stick it on a sideboard. The other night he came over to me when I was sitting at the dining room table - made a nuisance of himself til I pet him - then walked away to the side board, stood with his paws on it and then looked at his bowl, then at me, then his bowl, then at me....til I got up and gave it back to him. I think he must have decided he was a bit peckish? silly dog...
 
Clever B!

Henry has worked out that the best way to get a treat on walks is to run off into one of the paddocks, so I have to recall him then reward him. He actually looks to see if I'm watching, the little git! He has also figured out that if my hand goes into my pocket then there's a chance I may be getting a biscuit out for him, so he shoots back to me, this has lead to me tripping over him several times in the dark recently as he can see much better than I can!

Barney used to commando crawl too, at mealtimes he was meant to lie down in front of the fridge, so he would stretch his front paws right out, then otch his back end up, and repeat until suddenly he was right there next to us, without ever seeming to have moved
