Too early to work horse after abscess?

My horse has had a sub-solar abscess, and together with the snow that's meant near enougn 7 weeks out of work. He's sound again now but there is still something of a hole in his foot (it was excised 11 days ago). The farrier can't come for a week to replace his shoe so road work is out, but I was wondering about taking him into the manege. It's a sand manege though, so am I asking for trouble as there is still something of a hole? What about if I immediaelty soaked his foot afterwards to ensure that there was nothing left in it?

Of course I wouldn't do much in the manege as he simply isn't fit enough, but it's just that he's going doo lally tap doing nothing, AND I'm concerned that he's put on some weight. I've tried to get hoof putty but the local shops don't have it. Thanks.

Not surely it's too early or not but if he's sound then I would have thought it would be fine.

How about putting a flat piece of cotton wool or something similar over the hole and taping it on well with duct tape or vet wrap? That way nothing can get inside it

Yes, could do - although not sure how long it would stay on!

get a cheap value pack of nappies - cut one to size of horses foot - then vet wrap it up and perhaps but a 'bag for life' over the top or an old pillowcae, duxk tape it up and should be fine!

As long as he is sound and you should be fine, i find chap nappy and gaffer tape works a treat and should stay on in a sand shool as you wont be wearing down the gaffer tape.
I used to have 2 horses go out all day like it and i used to take it off and replace before bed, did not wear out whilst out all day
