My yard is charging me £1.20 per slice of haylage. This is about 8lb ( cannot remember whether its lb or kg !) but that is one slice of the large bale haylage. Its very bland but good quality.
I know the price of a large bale ranges from £22 to £35 ( they wont say the actual price)and there must be about 10? slices in one bale?
So what do you think is £1.20 reasonable compared to your prices of haylage in your area?

Cannot buy in the large bales for myself as only have one horse so wouldnt use it up quickly enough. Small bales are unavailable round here, and I think just as expensive- or not?

I would work it out as how much are you paying per day. As in do you use one slice a day?

If so thats 7 a week, which is £8.40 a week. I used to use 2.5 small bales a week, at £6 each, so £12 a week per horse.

If that makes any sense

hi i pay £28 for large square bale haylage it last 11 horses 2/ 1.5 days they all have roughly one square per day if that helps imo i don't think you are being over charged

We charge £1 a day for hay/haylage which will be going up to £1.20 in the new year. Thats for as much as they want though (within reason) rather than just one slice. We have had to change it for some people though as they have been going through a bale (of hay) and day, and when they only pay £1 and we pay £3 we are obviously losing money! I would say you are paying about right, I go through about two bales of hay a week for my horse which is about £6 and would expect to pay more for haylage. I think sometimes when you dont buy it yourself you dont realise how much you actually use and how much it costs!
