Dear all,
I am currently conducting a research project as part of my Sports Coaching course. My chosen subject title is “Too hard to ride? – The problems facing riding establishments and private horse owners”.

Below is a questionnaire please ensure you copy and paste the questionnaire into your text box and once you’ve added your answers submit it to the forum.

Also as a formality this is for a genuine academic project. Any answers posted may be used, anonymously, within the body of text however all answers will appear in the appendix. So please ensure genuine and sincere answers only.

Q1- how long have you been riding?

Approx 20 years

Q2- how often do you ride?

5/6 days a week sometimes twice a day

Q3- do you have any insurance to cover when ride?
If so what type of insurance is it? What does it cover?

Rider cover is included in both my horses insurance policies, sorry not entirely sure of what exact cover is.

Q4- where do you ride? (Delete non applicable)

Arena on yard In a field. Hacks/treks on both roads and bridle ways.

In a round pen.

Q5- if you go onto roads are they;
Country lanes quite-ish

Q6- why do you ride where you do?

I like to do a mixture of hacking and schooling with my horses, we are very lucky to have access to Salisbury plains and can hack totally off road although to access most if the bridleways around us we have to use the roads.

Q7- what do you think of the bridle ways around your area? Please state where in the country.

We have a few nice bridleways in our area but they are very short and you often have to cross busy roads to continue on them. As I said previously we are lucky enough to be able to hack all over the Salisbury plains, providing you don't mind riding through the odd army ambush or low flying helicopters!

Q8- what do you think the main threat to riding as a sport is?

MONEY!!! With fuel costs going up and up everything is becoming more difficult, getting to shows is nearly impossible for people like me who are trying to keep horses on a shoestring, hay costs are also astronomical!

I think it is a shame that so many bridleways are being closed and this will make hacking very difficult for some, it could be why there is an increase in RTA involving horses.

Any other comments;

Thank you very much for your time, Lizzie Warner, Bath University student.[/QUOTE]

Q6- why do you ride where you do? I am trying to get my horse fit so I try to put as many miles on her as possible over varied terrain and keep her life interesting

Q7- what do you think of the bridle ways around your area? Please state where in the country. - they are pretty good, although you need to have a very solid horse to access a lot of them - must be traffic proof, water proof, narrow bridge proof, tunnel proof... We have enough to do interesting all day rides though, and although I've been at my yard for two years I have been on two new hacks in the last week!

Good access to off-road hacking, beautiful scenary, all links round so no turning round.

Surrey - Bridleways are good, some restricted, and only acessible by some roadwork.

Q8- what do you think the main threat to riding as a sport is?
Money - So many people are unable to participate in riding as a sport, even lessons at a decent riding school are £40ph group. Increasing petrol & livery fee's mean the sport is becoming increasingly separated into classes.

Q1- how long have you been riding?

11 years. I am 19, been riding since I was 7.

Q2- how often do you ride?

As much as possible, between once every other day and twice a day depending on work and weather.

Q3- do you have any insurance to cover when ride?
If so what type of insurance is it? What does it cover?

Yes, have something that insures other people, not sure if I am covered myself.

Q4- where do you ride? (Delete non applicable)
Arena on yard. Hacks/treks on both roads and bridle ways.

Q5- if you go onto roads are they;
B roads. Country lanes, busy.

Q6- why do you ride where you do?

Because there is no-where else to go. You have to go on very busy roads to get to the bridleways.

Q7- what do you think of the bridle ways around your area? Please state where in the country.

We are quite lucky (near bristol) and have a few very good bridleways, however you have to ride on busy roads to reach them, and due to the ignorance/impatience of drivers, we often decide not to ride on them.

Q8- what do you think the main threat to riding as a sport is?

Lack of land. Because we are so overpopulated as a country, there is so little suitable land avaliable (for riding, grazing, bedding/feed crops and facilities), that this pushes rent and livery prices up to an extortionate amount. Also accesability, a lot of people never even have the chance to try riding.

UK - i only have one now. at my previous yards i have had some amazing maintained bridlepaths

Q8- what do you think the main threat to riding as a sport is?
cost. the cost of hay, bedding etc. i think at a point, cost will become prohibitive to owning a horse, and the cost of fuel etc, prohibitive to competing etc

Any other comments;

Q1- how long have you been riding?
About 9 years - first 5 were just once a month riding lessons.

Q2- how often do you ride?
5 days a week - often more than once a day

Q3- do you have any insurance to cover when ride?
If so what type of insurance is it? What does it cover?
My pony is insured. So that covers if she kicks a car and vets bills ect. I should really have riders insurance, seen as I now ride for a living!

Q4- where do you ride? (Delete non applicable)
Arena on yard. Hire arenas. In a field. Hacks/treks on roads. Hacks/treks on bridle ways. Hacks/treks on both roads and bridle ways.
All of the above!

Q5- if you go onto roads are they;
A roads. B roads. Country lanes, busy. Country lanes quite.
All of the above!

Q6- why do you ride where you do?
I love riding along the bridleways, across the common because it's just me and my pony. My pony and I are just happy hackers really - and she'll hack wherever, beach common or really busy roads. But we still ride in the school for lessons and to keep on top of some basic schooling. I also hire a local school to have jump lessons.

Q7- what do you think of the bridle ways around your area? Please state where in the country.
I've recently moved my pony to a new yard - only 8 miles away from the old one and the hacking is worlds apart. The old yard had no bridleways and only the odd track to canter down. whereas now at the new yard has a common at the end of the road and bridleways all around it. I'm in Devon.

Q8- what do you think the main threat to riding as a sport is?
The growing cost - Keeping horses has never been cheap but with hay now costing up to £5.50 for a small bale its getting ridiculous!!!
Also I think the stigma which non horsey people attach to horsey people is ruining the development of the sport. I think that the typical stereotypy stops new people joining. It also affect how people treat you - for instance how drivers pass you when your out hacking. Which is defiantly detrimental to the sport.

Q6- why do you ride where you do?

nice off road hacking, with plenty of canter tracks and nice scenery.

Q7- what do you think of the bridle ways around your area? Please state where in the country.

Warwickshire, very good around here. Ground conditions mean that some bridleways are not accesible during wet conditions. Gates mainly in good repair. Motorbikers can be a problem, even thought they have been notified to stay off the bridleways.
