Hi everyone,

I just wondered what you think an acceptable/maximum weight for a rider of a horse that has had quite a lot of muscle wastage after a kissing spine operation? Fred had lots of physio and then I got my very light 8.5 stone friend to ride him for a couple of weeks and then my 10 stone friend to ride him for a further three weeks...do you think he can carry 11 stone me??? I haven't ridden in ages and therefore should lose weight when I get going...
Fred is a 16.1hh, 13 years thoroughbred

At the risk of being ostracised and shouted down and disowned by every HHOer...

...I'd just ask the vet and physio. I guess it also depends on the type/support offered by the saddle, rider balance, weight in seat/through the knee etc.

I do not know anything really about KS apart from what it actually is, so as has been suggested i would have to check with the vet. Certainly prior to the problem i would say an almighty yes, but given the history i don't know how they are supposed to be dealt with thereafter

The vet and physio said it will be fine after a month or so of lighter riders whilst his topline and muscles developed. I just wanted to know whether it was acceptable or should I lose weight before getting on again. I think i'll lose a quick half stone
