too many rugs??!!

Holly is in the same TO with neck cover 24/7 as she lives out.

Same with Ada and same with Saf.

Blue has similar TO to Holly's with neck cover and wears a thin stable rug underneath if its cold. When he comes in at night he wears his nice (Robinsons bargain!) stable rug with either a duvet or thin stable rug underneath depending on how cold it is. Most he ever wears is 3 rugs.

My two youngsters live out...and are not natives...so will normally wear a MW with/without a hood depending on the weather, and if it's really extreme...like the blizzards/floods, they'll get to wear HW's.
My 19yo TB gets a full neck HW, and sometimes a fleece underneath. If it's extreme she gets a full neck underrug thing.
When I say HW, I mean 360g...

Err nope that doesn't work as I am ALWAYS cold!! and have a 'hot' horse! In fact I feel cold now sitting at the computer!! Think I will go and put a couple of rugs, oops mean jackets on!!

Digby is now fully clipped and during the day he has a fleece (thin) and a heavy turnout if cold, or just the hevay turnout if its a nice day.
At night he has a fleece (either the thin one if its mild, or the thick one if its cold, a thin single duvet that just comes up his heck and about halfway down his body; then a middle weight stable rug and hes nice and wartm at night.

My old boy is very hairy with a tiny amount of hair removed under his neck and tummy. He has a middlewieght turnout during the day and if its mild a cotton sheet at night, or a thin stable rug...he certainly wouldnt want to be warmer.

my freind has a t/b and he has 3 on sometimes when really cold but he really feels the cold and my boy has 1 h/w turn out in day and cozy stable rug at nights.

3 horses similarly clipped - mine and friends lightly rugged other horse 3 very thick layers. Cold morning - mine and friends horses warm ears and noses, other horse really cold. I rest my case!

Surely it depends on the horse?

I sometimes feel ridiculous about how Jim is rugged up but I've learned from experience what suits him. If he's not well rugged he gets tight in his muscles when ridden, doesn't eat & is as grouchy as hell. He's a cold horse & is only happy if he's kept warm.

Little Un is totally different. Naturally warm he is far happier unrugged most of the time & doesn't even own a HW or full neck. He's like a furnace - if Im cold I give him a cuddle to warm up!
