I've posted before about potentially being able to buy a couple of horses for backing and bringing on with the trainer I'm working for, but since I've been looking it seems that it's hard to get anything within our budget. We were hoping to look for a couple of unbacked 2-3 year olds between 14-16hh to produce as allrounders or more specialist if the horse showed a lot of talent. The woman I work for is quite a traditionalist and likes 'old fashioned' type horses. She likes part-bred or pure welsh, connemara, irish draught or thoroughbreds, but has a thing against warmbloods and coloureds though. Our budget is unfortunately limited to £2000-2500 per horse at the moment and we're based in Scotland but she does travel around the country as part of her job. It's a shame because there are some lovely horses on the market but so many are priced out of our range. She's not keen to pay more for something that young and she's investing in improving the facilities at the yard!

Any help much appreciated. I keep browsing H&H and Horsequest only to get disappointed when a. my boss doesn't like the horses I've found, or b. lovely horse is just too expensive!

Thanks again.

I have a really nice thoroughbred colt (he is not at all coltish). He is Weatherby's registered, 17 months old. He may be what you are after. He has an excellent temperament, is well handled and has good breeding. He is bitted and has been fully tacked up. He will make approx 15.2 - 16hh. He is regularly exercised on the beach (loves water!) and will canter off a lead horse. He will make a great allrounder. If you would like to see any pics of him send me a private message and I can send you some through.

I'm really suprised that you're struggling to find welsh youngsters especially for that money. TBs seem to be cheap, what about ones that have never gone into training.

If your instructor is experienced, why not have a look at the sales?

Down in wales we have an auction where you would get really nice youngsters for the price range of between £500 up to £1000.
But top end you would expect them to be backed for that.

I know of a coulored sporst horse gelding that was 16.2 and had been backed (was only 2yrs old) he was only £1700 and he was shown in hand succesfully at county level. he is going to be a fantastic horse.

Good luck xx

Thanks for your helpful replies

A trip to the sales might be the next step, as it seems we've been looking in the wrong places. Wales does seem to be the place for cheaper horses by the sound of it too. Could I ask where you found your horses, Munchkin and cbmcts, please?

Hark I will PM you for more details on that youngster.

your youngsters will need to be talented or very cheap to re sell! people dont seem to like buying un proven horses and if you keep them any length of time to produce they eat your profit! but if you got a budget of 2 to 2.5 k then you have a huge choice! but surely you would have to be selling at 4 to 4.5 k after 6 months work? the market at that price is limited unless seriously well bred and talented! i think the money is in very quiet cobs!!
