Young gelding (3 in December ) has, over the last few weeks, developed 'tooth bumps' along his lower jaw. Have run my hand along them and he pulls away, although I can't tell if it's because they are sore (totally undersstandable) of more of a "mummy get off!" Reaction.

Ive be been long reining him with the noseband off so as not to put pressure on the bumps.

How long can I expect it to take for the adult tooth to push out the cap? Is there a length of time you would think about calling a dentist to dislodge the cap?
Im not worried ATM as it's only been a week or so, but I was wondering what sort of things I should look out for with caps etc :)

eta: he had the dentist remove wolf teeth a month ago so he has recently had a rasp and check up

Leave them be if he's eating okay and comfortable. Remember the teeth don't all come in at once so it will be some time before they are all fully resolved. And yes, I'm sure they are sensitive. X-rays of a horse with a full set are terrifying! (Which is also true of kids!)

All my youngsters have still been shedding the odd cap when they were about four and a half. It usually isn't a problem, but sometimes one will get stuck and need help from a vet/dentist, but you'll know if this is the case as the horse will probably start quidding and showing obvious discomfort when eating.
