Tooth extraction, bone fragments, infection...

My 7yo GSD had a few rotten teeth out two weeks ago. They did have to come out and he hasn't scratched his jaw/whimpered whilst doing that since, so I'm pretty confident they were hurting.

But.

He's got sadder and quieter over the last few days. Developed lick granulomas on his front legs (now sorted), stopped chewing toys, generally giving what I considered to be an impression of pain. Had a look in his gob, couldn't see anything. OH said I was being overprotective (something I am very conscious of, as this dog is my lifeblood) so I held off til today, when he couldn't settle to sleep and started to have really pongy breath. So I whizzed him off to the vet. I think I've been 12 times now since October when my old boy first fell ill. They're lovely but I'm sick of the sight of them!

There is a piece of bone working its way out of one of the extraction sites (big molar at the back of his mouth). Vet has given antibiotics and pain relief, expects it to work its way out in the next few days. I couldn't see it when I looked previously, so I do think it's coming out on its own.

Anybody got any experience of this? Just hoping other folks' experiences are that it will come out and we aren't in for a long haul of chronic distress - tooth pain is the WORST.
 
Not a dog but myself. I had a tooth extracted in July last year and over the course of 6/7 weeks 5 bits of sequestra came out of the gum rubbing my tongue sore in the process. The dentist said it was common.
 
Almost more reassuring rabatsa... you would be able to say quite clearly if it hadn't cleared up when an animal can't!

Hope this is a quick process for my boy, he is very sad at the moment and the new pup will be coming in a few weeks, I want him happy by then so he can enjoy having a new friend.
 
Sorry it isn’t helpful to this case, but I saw a fascinating thing on FB yesterday about a 3YO thoroughbred filly who has had sequestra removed from the base of her ear! They thought it was an ear infection originally but X-rays and a CT scan showed a lot more. The equivalent in lay persons terms of 5 teeth apparently.... weird!

it's only a little bit of floating bone I think, rice grain size or so. I asked the vet and he said it would just come out on it's own, I'm not sure the young man would keep his gob open long enough to do anything with it unless he was anaesthetise again which we don't want to do. I think it might actually be out now. He has definitely perked up. I'll try and have a look!
