Tooth extraction?

Two questions really:

My guy came in yesterday with a large swelling on one side of his face after being lethargic the day before. Temp 38.9 and a tiny bit of nasal discharge.

Vet out and jabbed him, thinks strangles 98% ruled out due to one side only, quite possibly tooth abscess - which makes sense. Started bute today and Norodine tmrw.

Of course, it would kick off over the Easter break! Vet basically said we're on hol until Tuesday unless it becomes an emergency - which is fair enough!

Hoping to lure the dentist out for a look, but:

If it is a tooth, any experiences of cost of extraction?

And any thoughts on possible non-toothy causes?

Thanks......

If it is a tooth abscess there is no reason at this stage to be thinking of extraction, unless he is old and has had a history of tooth issues, the abscess should be resolved with antibiotics, 1 of mine had similar several years ago, it cleared up within a week with no further problems, fortunately as he has had plenty of other things to deal with since, extraction is not something to be done lightly as it leaves you with potential ongoing issues that can cause problems for the rest of the horses life.

There's no real point in getting a dentist to him he needs the antibiotics to have a chance to work. He could possibly have a cracked tooth which has got infected but he could possibly simply have got an abscess from a thorn in his face or similar.

Is it in same place as this one?

Slightly further down (ie towards nose). Firm rather than puffy....

Could indeed be a thorn! Eating normally.......

Seems down a bit today, and he's less subdued generally. But extraction would be a ******, so hope abiotics work.
