Can you shop around?

Last year I paid around £1500 for two fillings in 109/110 and two extractions of 402/403.

That included the procedures which took place on 2 separate days, X-rays and also routine floating, plus another 3 check up visits.

This was by an excellent ambulatory specialist vet dentist. The mare has recovered extremely well, she must have been in so much pain before. The fillings have stayed in place.

402 and 403 are incisors, so were relatively easy to access. Molars would be trickier.
 
I’ve just paid £1700 for my Connie to have a molar extracted. That included all the X-rays on the initial visit, AB’s to reduce the abscess, sedation, rasp of a wonky jnsisor and the call-out fee. 10 days later I took him in for the day and the tooth was removed by a specialist visiting dental vet with all the sedation and more X-rays as required, Bute and follow up visit to check the socket. I thought it was pretty good value for all the time and work involved.
 
Contact the Equine Dental Clinic. I can highly recommend them and they cover the whole of the UK.

One horse had an extraction for ~£1k.

Another horse needed remedial work for severe diastema that the dentist missed for years. Repeat visits to replace putty were a few hundred. The initial treatment was under £1k.

Neither horse was x-rayed but I can see how the price could creep up to £3k with aftercare. £3k seems a steep starting point but there could be something more complicated to it.
 
The job has already been done so can't shop around unfortunately. My own fault for not asking for quote but one of my horses had a tooth out couple of years ago and didn't cost anywhere near that. Daylight robbery. It was a referal to the equine dental clinic.
 
How old is the horse?

Younger horses have much more root so much harder to get out. Oldies have little root, so less hard.

Sedation or GA?

It will have a bearing on the cost.

My old wb gelding had ten front teeth out in October due to EOTRH (Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis).
So, a day at the clinic with vet and a nurse and sedation, Bute to take home, visit a week later to check sockets and remove stitches. Bill came to around 3K AUD.
Its been a huge success and he's gained so much weight, but his tongue does hang out.

My EDT quoted between £600 to 2.2K to take a split one out years ago. I was half debating whether to call time on my girl as she was 23 and had other issues and it was a huge amount of money to pay when she was probably nearing the end of her life, but I decided she could go for investigation and take it from there. Apparently at the vets they put pliers on the tooth whilst she was in the stall sedated, the vet then popped over to the cupboard to get more sedative or something, by which time she'd shook her head and the slab fracture had come off. That's hand on heart what I was told by the vet. The whole thing was really strange. The bill wasn't anything near that cost, I think it was around £700 in the end.
