had dentist today as horse uncomfortable in mouth.diagnosed slab fracture right top tooth and recommended vet to sedate and have a good lock possibly remove.i am now in total panic that she may need surgery if its not straightforward.he seems to think it may come off easily and leave root intact.ive never had any tooth problems with horses.shes 17 and has always had routine work done and no problems.ringing vets first thing then she can have pain relief and antibiotics too if needed, help

I wouldn't worry too much.

They only need to sedate to have a good look at it.

If they can oly remove the crown area (thats the part above the gum line. then it will heal over. The root will become encased in bone and cause no problems.

Sometimes though a root left behind can eventually work its way to the surface and protrude through the gum...this is when the dentist may need to remove it all. Still though its very easy to do and would be over very quickly.

your horse would be more comfortable without it so I would let them get on with it and I would turn your attention to the horses food as he /she will me a bit sore for a few days. Your dentist will advise you as to chewing ability. Don't worry all will be fine.

My horse had a cheek tooth removed when he was 4 yrs old. They tried to do it under sedation but it fractured and he had to have a GA. The following week another older horse came in for a very similar thing, his was removed without problem under sedation. My vet told me that young horses had longer roots and teeth are much easier to remove in older horses.
A friends horse had both upper front teeth removed under sedation and he copes great. I was amazed as I thought they needed them to pull the grass???
Try not to panic, Im sure everything will be fine.
The only thing I have to do now is have the vet twice a year to mechanically rasp the opposite tooth down as it has nothing to wear against.

dont panic its very common.he will only remove the slab no doubt which will involve just elevating the tissue around it as hopefully its a lose slab.worst case is exrays then its still only the slab that will be remmoved.im guessing it will be a 208 as its common on these teeth.be aware though that quite often the opposite will fracture in time also..it will need regular dental visits too as will pack feed .not much erruption left at 17 so shouldnt be too many more problems.just dont worry its quite a regular occurance
