My horse has been diagnosed with one of these, the absess has burst through his lower jaw and he seems happy in himself. Vet advised leaving it for a week to see if it settles down- if so he will be fine no worries, if not will need x-rays and possibly tooth removal. Now this is going to sound like a really harsh question - but can he be ridden? Im concerned because its his mouth and i dont want to hurt him with a bit, but seeing as it has burst does that mean its ok? ive lunged him in a lunge cavesson and he was keen etc, but worried about the tooth getting nocked by bit (although not sure which tooth it is in mouth until x rays are done, if they are to be done)

Anyone been through this before who can offer some advice?

My Youngster had a similar problem acouple of years ago, and I was advised by the vet to not put a bit in his mouth, as it would be painful. He had to have x-rays, but the abcess cleared really quickly with antibiotics. If in doubt double check with the vet.

my mare had one exactly this time last year, it was in her upper jaw and it didnt burst, it was the size of a large egg sticking out on the side of her face and they cut through the side. she would have had to have not een ridden at all anyway as everything got in the way, but she happened to be lame at the same time so didnt discuss it that much.

after the op which went very well they out in a filling which she had no problems with and then had it removed a few weeks later and the tissue where her tooth had been removed had all grown half filling the gap left.

since had no problems

Loan horse had this problem - we didn't ride her until the tooth had been removed, and all infection had cleared up and the wound healed.
