Hi all,

after a little advice

i bought a 17yo welsh mare 15hh in February this year, not quite what i wanted in height or age, BUT, after having a bad accident last year i wanted something safe and reliable to go and have a bit of fun on for a few years, which despite covid I have done this year, i have done hunter trials xc and more hacking than i have ever done in my life, so despite the age and height she has ticked all my boxes.

Now she has come from a home who had her for ten years, they have done little of everything with her, but later years she did mainly endurance, and nothing at all last year.

I didn't expect to progress as quickly as i have this year, thinking when i bough her i would still be plodding round the lanes most of this year, but my injury has healed well and im doing everything.

i have done very little in the school with her, and i am very aware that i don't want to be doing too much of it to keep her joint's in good order, she is very fit and healthy, back and saddle have all been checked ( im religious about these things)

But i would really like to get her going a little better on the flat, and to try and build a little more top line as she has lost a little over the last couple of months, new saddle has been acquired and she has the last month off.

i dont want to achieve the Valego standard just enough to go and do a few prelim tests, now my physio has advised long reining to help build top line, which i have no problem in doing, are there any other exercises on the ground and ridden that could help? i would just like her to start stretching down, i have found this easier with many of the youngsters i have had, but i suppose i might be being a little lenient with her, having not had an older horse before, i dont want to overdo things

the handiest things for building top line gently on an older horse is hacking up hills. there are tons of exercises you can do to get them stronger behind even in just walk.

on the ground carrot stretches and cavaletti are great.

Poles are excellent for building top line while long reining. There are plenty of ideas on the internet but even poles on the ground will help her lift her back.

I’m also a big fan of this aid which I’ve made with a simple elastic bandage. http://www.thetackshed.com.au/harrys-horse-elastic-lunging-band/

It just makes them aware of their hind end and encourages them to step under. My cob improved no end just in walk and longreined 3 times a week.

Have a bit of patience...regular work hacking out and working properly will develop her topline. Our retired 22 year old shaped up over the past 6 months with daughter riding her once again.

Do you have an instructor?
It might be worth looking into straightness training too.
When my welshie was 19 he had 6 months off but had no issue coming back with topline, he hunted until 24 and I do think the exercise he was getting helped keep him comfy and supple. I tended to school once and lunge/long rein/in hand work once a week and the other 4 days he was hacked.

no instructor as yet, but this is something i would like to work on over the winter, with a view to doing some unaffiliated eventing next year and some veteran showing maybe, i haven't had lessons since before i broke by tibia last year - prior to this i was competing bsja every weekend - fancy a change :)
