No, I buy what I think suits my horse

Hi,
This is just a general post?
when a rider competes at shows and does well (mostly winning!) they always take their hats off and usually gallop round the arena for the lap of honour!
NOW i understand that this is a great tradition of riders but should it be allowed - especially as it sets an example to the younger genaration thatb it is cool to ride WITHOUT a hat - this is a major issue as in the arena anything could happen and the horse could spook at anything and the rider could fall-off...
under safety rules in BHS rule books you should always wear a hat when riding?
Any thoughts on this issue?
Thanks,
LuvrofHorses

BHS rules, BRC rules, BSJA rules, BD rules, BE rules - they all vary to a degree. I think at that level - it is at the discretion of the rider. When they get to that status I think they know their horses well enough - are used to those atmosphere's - they probably take (especially the eventers) a bigger risk whilst jumping/x-c - but ultimately, its their decision and their risk.

I've only seen blokes that their hats off - never women (not saying they don't just that I've never seen it). Then again all the people I know who ride without hats are men. I hope top riders are less likely to fall off...

What I don't like is when they show the riders warming up etc and they hardly ever wear hats.

Yes, I think that dressage riders should have to wear a hat AND hunting members - it is dreadful that rider's who ride over 4ft hedges at full speed wear hats with no strap! such a bad example to set!

On the note of hunt staff wearing hats without straps, it is advised that they should wear a Patey beagler which has been correctly fitted, these are then very well fitted and from the beagler i wear for dressage eventing nearly fits me better than my crash hat which is more lose fitting, but safe i must add!! At the Olympics, Athens and on H&C at Houghton top hats often blow off, tbh i think it is all at the riders descretion (sp).
On the note of men/women, it would be incorrect surely for women to remove theirs!!! Even when off a horse on a podium women still dont remove theirs.

I think the the 'examples' are made from the people teaching the kids not the top riders. Has the EVER been an injury from a rider doing this while celebrating (I don't know one way or the other but I've certainly never heard of one). If kids really want bad examples of horsemanship there are plenty out there and this isn't one of them.

Me neither

Mind you I wouldn't mind a nice new hat if someone was throwing it away

Maybe they should ban horses and make them compete on foot. Dangerous animals you know, minimise risks and all that.

Exactly!! far too much is made of horses in the equestrian world and its a downright dangerous trend! Ban the horse thereby removing any element of risk/fun! also ban any show of exuberence after winning, any horseless riders running round the ring after winning must be penalised.
JM07's suggestion of 'How about getting them to take off their jacket and shirt??' also has its merits depending on view.

I've never thought about it to be honest, and can't say I think it's a big deal.

Who cares, It's the riders choice..they've worked darn hard to achieve their goal and are celebrating. What's next? Ban galloping and insist the rider trot at a steady pace with hat and inflatable arm bands on? I'm sure some health and safety busy body will ban it at some point.

Setting a bad example to young riders? No that's the job of Amy Winehouse, there's are more important issues to worry about than this.

Once you are over 16,it's your head and your choice.

I have to disagree with this!! I think its a terrible example to set children.

This is like saying that skinny anorexic models in magazines aren't setting bad examples!! Because going by your logic "they're over 16, its their body they can do what they like!!" and I think thats disgusting.

Thanks but I don't actually need a hat. I just thought if I was sat in the front row and it landed on my lap - well, you wouldn't say no, would you

Unfortunately there are bad examples for children all around us from swearing to skinny models. You can't protect children from everything or should I say, censor everything. It's just one of those things.

The concept of your head your choice is also flawed if said person then expects the NHS to treat them, in which case the tax payer is paying for there choice.
