Some people love to have that horse waht you see in the Dressage arena with the high cadence, beautiful, to die for trot and extended. But what whould you say if you could improve your horses/ponies trot to have more cadence so he shows himself off more or maybe have that beautiful trot you dreamed for.

Well you can everyone and its quite easy.

put a few troting poles on ground in your sand school or where ever you train your horse/pony and send him/her over them allowing whne to trot over them freely is streching thier whole back and after a couple of times doing this you will find your horses medium to extended trot and become powerful and your horse is working from behind more.

but thats got nothing to do with a more cadent trot? you say well actuly it does.
now raise your poles on oppasite ends so first pole raised on the right the second on the left ,you get the idea

you can raise these poles on supporting pole ends or old milk creates. or anyhting that will be able to hold a pole but be safe as you our working with our horse.

send him/her over them in walk first if you wish then in trot this means the horse/pony will have to think more of lifting thier feet to clear the pole. doing this now and then when your training your horses/pony trot should improve and have more cadence to it.

hope this helps people

I'm surprised a top dressage rider has the time to post random informative articles on an internet forum! Don't you all have 20 horses a day to ride??! I used to be taught by one of the top junior riders and with getting up at 5am each day to ride 10 horses, then muck out, then teach all afternoon and evening, she'd never have had time for this!

No offence but are you from Germany?? only the spelling of opposite thought u might be?? Thanks for the tip though, in the last test I did with my boy apparently he has natural cadence and rhythm according to the judge (was our first test together) so maybe I could get that fancy trot out of him! Or if your looking for a new dressage horse you could have a go?? LOL! thank again for the tip though. Twice in one weekend, Has the frost affected your comps?

I did some raised trotting poles with Axey and he passaged over them..

Mine would just try to jump them and then be most disappointed to find they weren't later raised up to be actual jumps!

lol he did it the first few times so we tried to video it but then he stopped doing it and just trotted over them normally!

isnt that carl hester on the avator? I do like his riding, I think his lot are coming, they did last year, just watching him school his horses taught me SO much.

depends what he moves like, are you wanting more elevation,(raised poles) hindlegs to come under more,(any poles) or to lengthen his stride, (gradually increasing pole spaces, trotting downhill) etc.... loads of exercises with poles, can also use to help most canters. (hope that was a bit helpful?)

yes some horses do do that i would recommend tying to stop that has if he did just land on the pole he could damage his pedal bone and we dont want him out of action but the rasing poles does help the passage aswell.

How about ‘how to get a really good medium trot’? Especially on a horse that is designed to pull a cart!

well you can try the poles on the floor and rasie them which this post is about getting a good cadenced trot. you can also try leg yielding as this free's the back and will make the horse be more balanced and tough from behind.

hope this helps

my mums welsh (palomino on the end of the signature) learnt medium and extended out hunting, plenty of enthusiasm and impulsion, once you get it you kind of know what your feeling for in the arena. make sure he is moving off you leg well before you practice, i like to work on these paces out in a field or open countryside, at first, more room. I used to show a dales mare, and with practice, she got as good as the welsh Ds and was beating them. I think with cobs its got to come from enthusiam, got to get them to really enjoy it, as a treat. harness the power...? What do you think?

Pip learnt to extend whilst pulling a cart

He still does extend better driven without me fumbling all over his back. Prehaps Bodey would like to drive
smirk.gif

You know what I think Bodey would do pretty well pulling a cart Rara, I would just have no idea where to start though!! Maybe something to think about for the future though?
