I've just taken a 19 y o on loan. He's very forward going and fit. I'd like to do some sponsored rides or shows with him later this year but he gets very excitable in strange company - in fact with anything that upsets his routine. He has done stuff in the past but not recently. Any top tips on what I can do as prep work now before we hit the public would be much appreicated!

Take him to a smaller local show and don't enter anything. Then at the next show, just enter an in-hand class (veteran would be ideal). Slowly build up, until you are ready to take part in sponsored rides.

It might also be worth seeing if there are any local schools you could hire for a change of scene without an actual comp happening.

Or join a riding club/group of friends for some new company without the pressure?

Slowly, slowly... if he has done it happily before you should be able to get there again :)

I would say join a local riding club. Daughter's NF hadn't done much when we got him and used to get rather worked up at shows etc, however after a year of hard graft at Pony Club (training 1-2 times a week and competing or a rally once a week) it's yawn yawn boring to him when he goes out in the trailer now (other than hunting!)
